Chapter 6 - WHAT THE RECORDINGS KEPT

The recordings did not capture every moment.
They did not need to.
They preserved dates, voices, and decisions.
Lorraine could be heard calculating how much water to give me without making me “too comfortable.” Marcus discussed the forged treatment papers and told her the refinance would close once he controlled the baby’s trust.
One file captured Lorraine saying:
“If she gives birth down here, we call after. A living baby is all we need.”
Another recorded Marcus practicing the story he planned to tell emergency responders.
Claire became confused.
Claire locked herself inside.
Claire refused medical care.
Claire attacked him when he tried to help.
He prepared multiple versions because he believed truth was whatever remained after the victim could no longer speak.
The old phone also preserved photographs I took before the battery became too weak: the cage door before and after it was welded, the floor panel, the bruised food, and the treatment documents Marcus once brought downstairs to frighten me.
The house yielded more evidence.
My regular phone was hidden inside Lorraine’s bedroom bag.
Draft messages had been scheduled to send from my account for another two weeks.
The refinance application contained a forged digital signature.
A contractor’s invoice showed Marcus purchased steel panels, welding supplies, and a heavy lock while telling the store they were for animal transport.
Upstairs, his dinner guests had been eating beside a folder containing lender documents.
Marcus had planned to ask two business partners to invest after telling them my property refinance was already approved.

The dinner was not only a performance of normal marriage.
It was a fundraising meeting built on my disappearance.
