Chapter 7 - SARAH’S DEAL
Sarah eventually accepted responsibility for the assault and for her part in the financial records.
Her attorney argued that Brian manipulated her with promises of marriage, money, and a new home. That was true.
It was also true that she grabbed my hair, forced my head down, and dropped a heavy bag onto my body while my daughter watched.
Manipulation explained her choices.
It did not erase them.
Her cooperation helped establish that Brian planned the confrontation, prepared the documents, coached Hannah, and intended to shift all physical blame onto Sarah if the camera survived. In return, prosecutors considered her cooperation when resolving the case.
She served time.
Months later, someone told me she had been assigned to a kitchen work detail where one of her jobs involved moving dry-goods bags from storage. The person expected me to appreciate the irony.
I did not.
Justice was not Sarah carrying flour.
Justice was Hannah no longer checking my face before answering a question.
Justice was every remaining dollar in her education account staying exactly where it belonged.
Justice was the house becoming quiet without Brian’s keys in the door.
Brian’s case lasted longer. Financial fraud, coercive control, witness coaching, and his role in the assault moved through separate legal channels. There was no single dramatic sentence that fixed everything.
But the savings were protected.
The stolen transfers became part of the divorce accounting.
And the custody evaluator concluded that Brian’s willingness to manipulate Hannah’s testimony created a serious emotional risk.
I received primary custody.
