Sarah asked for a separate interview before the officers finished documenting the kitchen.

She had seen the papers.

She had heard Hannah.

Most importantly, she had watched Brian deny the same plan he had encouraged minutes earlier.

Her confidence disappeared quickly once she realized the video showed her hands on the bag and his body several feet away.

Brian had designed the scene so she would carry the physical responsibility.

He told Sarah that once I signed, I would leave voluntarily. He said the education account contained nearly half a million dollars and that he would use part of it to save the company, buy out my share of the house, and build a new life with her.

The actual account held less than half that amount.

It was also legally restricted.

Brian knew Sarah would not understand the difference.

He had promised her the guest room would become her office. He had promised her my SUV. He had even shown her a draft custody schedule in which she would handle Hannah’s school pickups while I received supervised weekend contact.

Sarah believed she was helping him remove an unstable wife.

But Brian had prepared a different version for everyone else.

On his laptop, investigators found emails drafted to his attorney describing Sarah as an obsessed employee who had become violent after Claire confronted her about inappropriate messages. Another draft stated Brian had tried to protect both his wife and daughter but was unable to stop Sarah in time.

If the camera remained hidden, I would appear unstable.

If the camera emerged, Sarah would appear solely responsible.

Brian had created a story for every possible outcome except the one in which Hannah told the truth.

When Sarah learned about those drafts, she asked to hear the pantry footage again.

The officer played the section where Brian said, “Do it now.”

Her face changed.

“He told me he would stand behind me,” she said.
