Chapter 7 - The Routine of Deception

By late July, the midsummer heat had turned the city into a humid crucible.

Living with Mark became an exercise in theatrical performance. I learned how to smile when he walked into the room, how to ask about his day in a voice that sounded genuinely interested, and how to pour his morning coffee without letting my hands tremble.

The human mind possesses a terrifying ability to adapt to abnormal conditions. Within a month, maintaining a double life inside my own marriage felt almost routine.

Mark was getting careless. It is the inevitable fate of every liar who succeeds for too long; they mistake their partner’s silence for ignorance.

On a hot Wednesday evening, he left his phone on the kitchen counter while he went out to the back patio to grill salmon. The phone chimed once.

I didn't open the device. I simply leaned over the counter and looked at the lock screen notification banner.

Elena: The contractor confirmed the October timeline. Everything is on schedule for the 18th.

My heart gave a single, violent thud against my ribs, then resumed its steady rhythm.

The 18th.

There it was again. The date wasn't just a nostalgic memory of their first night together; it was an active target on their shared calendar. They were planning something specific for October 18.

"Salmon’s almost done!" Mark called out from the patio, his voice floating through the screen door along with the scent of charred wood and lemon pepper. "Can you grab the serving platter from the pantry?"

"Coming!" I called back, my voice completely steady.

I pulled the platter from the shelf, walked out to the patio, and handed it to him. He smiled, his eyes squinting against the smoke of the grill, looking every bit the devoted, content husband enjoying a quiet summer evening with his wife.

"You look beautiful tonight, Clara," he said softly, leaning over to kiss my cheek.

May you like

I felt the cool brush of his lips against my skin. "Thanks, Mark. It's just the summer heat."

I looked at his eyes—clear, blue, and utterly calm—and wondered how a man could hold two entirely different realities in his head without his skull cracking under the pressure.
