Chapter 13 - The Opening of Unit 402

Silence hung in the hallway for ten long seconds.

Then came the sound of footsteps inside—soft, hurried steps on hardwood flooring. A chain latch slid back with a metallic scrape. The heavy oak door swung open six inches.

Mark stood in the doorway.

He was wearing a dark grey silk robe over white cotton trousers. His hair was slightly tousled, his face relaxed with the quiet, luxurious ease of a man enjoying a late morning in a private sanctuary.

"Did the front desk bring the..." Mark’s voice died in his throat.

His eyes fell first on David, standing tall in his professional grey suit with a thick legal packet in his hands.

Then, Mark’s gaze shifted two feet to the left.

He saw me.

The color did not drain from his face slowly; it vanished instantly, as if an internal switch had been flipped. His jaw slackened. The relaxed, confident posture he had carried for eleven years collapsed in a single, devastating second.

"Clara..." he breathed, his voice a dry, ragged whisper. "What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be—"

"In Chicago?" I interrupted softly, my voice smooth as ice. "Or at home, waiting for you to return from your conference in Boston?"

Behind him, deep inside the sunlit, beautifully furnished interior of Unit 402, a female voice called out casually: "Mark, babe? Is that the breakfast delivery?"

Elena Vance walked into the hallway foyer, wearing an oversized white linen shirt, holding a mug of coffee.

She stopped dead in her tracks three feet behind Mark. Her eyes darted from Mark’s frozen profile to me, then down to the legal packet in David’s hand.

"Mark?" Elena asked, her voice dropping into a sharp, defensive register. "Who is this?"

Mark couldn't speak. He stared at me, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly, like a man drowning in ankle-deep water.

I leaned down slowly, picked up the florist card and the thermal receipt from the white rose bouquet, and held them out toward him.

"You dropped this six months ago at Bellamy’s, Mark," I said, my tone as calm and conversational as if I were handing him his car keys. "I kept it safe for you."
