Chapter 6 - The Hallway Encounter

The rest of the evening dragged on like a slow-motion nightmare. Michael endured another hour of Marcus’s arrogant pontifications and Elisa’s shallow social commentary, dutifully letting his phone record every chilling detail of their conversation.
At ten o'clock, Michael stood up from the table, announcing his departure.
"I have an early morning meeting with my editor in the city," Michael said, gathering his dark winter coat from the brass coat rack in the foyer. "Thank you for dinner."
Elisa offered a brief, polite goodbye before disappearing into the kitchen to instruct the maid on clearing the table. Marcus stood near the front entryway, his broad frame framed by the massive mahogany front door, watching Michael with cold, calculating eyes.
"Safe drives back to Chicago, Michael," Marcus said, his voice flat. "Don't leave it so long before you visit again."
"I won't," Michael said, his tone carrying a double meaning that Marcus completely missed.
Michael walked down the long, dimly lit central hallway leading toward the guest wing and the front exit. The hallway was grand and oppressive—lined with expensive oil paintings, polished marble floors, and brass wall sconces that cast long, flickering shadows down the corridor.
Suddenly, a small shadow stepped out from the doorway of the linen closet near the end of the hall.
It was Sophia.
She ran toward him on silent, stocking-covered feet. Before Michael could say a word, the little girl threw her small arms violently around his waist, burying her face into the fabric of his dark cardigan. She held onto him with terrifying, frantic strength, her tiny body trembling against his legs.
Michael immediately dropped his coat onto the floor, kneeling down and wrapping his arms securely around her, shielding her small frame.
"I'm going to fix this, Sophia," Michael whispered fiercely into her hair. "I'm coming back for you. I promise."
Sophia pulled back slightly. She didn't say a word. Instead, with fast, urgent movements, she took her worn, cream-colored stuffed rabbit—the toy she had clutched like a lifeline all evening—and forcefully pressed it into Michael’s hands.
Michael looked down at the toy, entirely confused. "Sophia? What are you doing? This is your rabbit."
Sophia leaned in close to his ear, her warm breath trembling against his cheek. Her hazel eyes were wide with a profound, terrifying secret.

"Don't let Daddy see what's inside," she whispered.
Michael froze.
