Chapter 5 - The Silent Recorder

When Michael re-entered the dining room, the scene appeared superficially identical to how he had left it. The warm golden candlelight flickered against the crystal glasses, the birch wood popped softly in the fireplace, and the scent of roasted meat hung heavy in the air.
Marcus sat at the head of the table, casually swirling a glass of deep red Cabernet Sauvignon. He looked relaxed, powerful, and entirely in his element. Elisa was sitting beside him, applying a fresh coat of pink lip gloss in a small compact mirror before snapping it shut with a sharp click.
Sophia was seated at the far end of the table, completely motionless. Her tiny hands were folded in her lap beneath the tablecloth, her plush rabbit resting beside her thigh, hidden from view. She stared straight ahead at her untouched plate, her small face an unreadable mask of compliant terror.
Michael walked back to his seat across from Marcus and sat down smoothly. He picked up his napkin, placed it across his lap, and took a small sip of his water, acting as if nothing out of the ordinary had transpired in the kitchen.
Elisa watched Michael carefully from across the table, her eyes narrowed slightly, searching his face for any sign of suspicion. "What took you so long in there, Michael?" she asked, her voice coated in artificial sweetness.
"Just getting fresh water," Michael replied casually, his voice cool and completely relaxed. "And checking a text from my producer in Chicago about our edit timeline."
Marcus took a slow sip of his wine, setting the crystal glass back down onto the mahogany wood with a soft, authoritative thud. "You really should consider getting out of the documentary business, Michael. Spending months chasing tragic stories for public television isn't real work. You have the Carter name; you could easily manage one of our firm's media relations divisions."
Michael said nothing. He didn't debate, he didn't argue, and he didn't raise his voice.
Instead, beneath the edge of the white linen table runner, Michael discreetly slipped his hand into his dark cardigan pocket. His fingers felt the familiar, smooth glass screen of his smartphone. With practiced, blind precision, he unlocked the device, opened his voice recording application, and pressed the record button.
He placed the phone flat on his knee beneath the table, the microphone positioned upward toward the center of the room.
"I like my work, Marcus," Michael said smoothly, keeping his tone conversational. "It allows me to look closely at things people try very hard to hide."
Marcus chuckled—a low, arrogant sound. "People don't hide things out of malice, brother. They hide things because the public doesn't have the stomach for management. Whether it's corporate data or family structure... discipline requires a firm hand. Most people are too weak to enforce it."
Elisa quickly reached over and patted Marcus's arm, smiling tightly. "Marcus is right. Structure is everything. Especially with children. Sophia has been... particularly difficult lately. Unruly. Disobedient. But Marcus knows how to handle her."

Michael watched Elisa’s face as she spoke. He heard the subtle, defensive cadence in her voice—the distinct tone of an enabler justifying cruelty to maintain her lifestyle. Every word, every confession of 'discipline' and 'handling her,' was being captured in high-definition audio on the phone resting on his knee.
Sophia sat beside them, completely still, not daring to move a muscle as her parents talked about her as if she weren't even in the room.
