Chapter 7 - The Offshore Ghost Trust

Jessica fell to her knees among the broken glass of her champagne flute, her floral summer dress soaking in the spilled wine and coffee. She looked at the armed Military Police officers lining her sister’s living room, then at her husband being dragged toward the front door, and finally up at Emily’s unyielding face.
"It wasn't just the lake house, Emily..." Jessica sobbed, her voice breaking into a pathetic, desperate squeak. "It wasn't just this property..."
Emily stepped closer, her camouflage fatigue pants brushing against Jessica’s trembling shoulders. "What else did you sign my name to, Jessica?"
"The military survivor benefits..." Jessica confessed, her tears dropping onto the hardwood floorboards. "And... and the primary Carter family trust... the offshore account in the Caymans that Dad set up before he died."
Emily felt an icy stillness settle over her chest.
Her father, General Thomas Carter, had passed away three years ago, leaving a five-million-dollar military family trust intended to support his daughters and fund medical research for veteran rehabilitation. Because Emily was on active combat duty, the trust rules stipulated that if she passed away without heirs, the entire five-million-dollar capital reserve would immediately convert into an unmonitored lump-sum payout to her surviving sibling.
To Jessica.
"Five million dollars," Emily whispered, the full scale of the monstrous betrayal finally crystallizing in her mind. "You didn't just want my lake house. You declared me dead so you could trigger the death clause on Dad’s trust."
"Ryan made me do it!" Jessica screamed, reaching out frantically to grab the hem of Emily’s fatigue pants. "He said you were always in danger overseas! He said you were going to die in combat anyway! He said why let the government hold onto Dad’s money when we were starving right now?!"
Emily pulled her leg back, severing her sister’s grip as if her hand were covered in venom.
"I wasn't starving, Jessica," Emily said, her voice dropping into a register of terrifying, cold judgment. "I was fighting. I was putting my life on the line every single day while you and your husband sat in my living room, drinking my wine, eating off my tables, and calculating how much money my corpse was worth to you."
Emily turned to Captain Vance. "Where is the notary who signed the June 12th document?"
Captain Vance pulled a secure digital tablet from his tactical vest, tapping the screen twice before handing it to Emily. "Our cyber intelligence team intercepted the network traffic three minutes ago, Colonel. The notary wasn't a local civilian clerk."
Emily looked at the tablet screen.
Displayed on the high-definition monitor was a mugshot of a man in a tailored dark suit, accompanied by an official federal law enforcement dossier.
