Chapter 4 - The Signature of a Ghost

Emily’s gaze shifted away from Ryan’s groaning form on the floor and locked onto the paper resting in the coffee stain.
She froze. Her heart gave a single, heavy thud against her ribs.
Slowly, Emily dropped to one knee among the broken glass, her tactical boots crunching against the crystal fragments. She reached out her gloved hand and pulled the legal document out of the pool of spilled liquid, keeping her eyes fixed on the blue ink at the bottom of the page.
Emily Elizabeth Carter.
It was her signature. The slight slant to the right, the distinct loop on the 'E', the sharp cross bar through the 't'—it was an exact, terrifying duplicate of her handwriting.
The elder investor who had dropped the folder took a frantic step back, raising his hands in a defensive gesture, his face pale with alarm as he looked at the uniformed officer holding the paper.
"We... we didn't know!" the investor stammered out, his voice shaking. "Ryan told us you signed the property sale before you died overseas! He said the military hadn't released the official casualty presser yet, but the estate trust was authorized to liquidate the lake house!"
Emily didn't answer the investor. The words died overseas echoed inside her head like a siren.
She turned her head slowly, her blue eyes moving across the grand living room, past the terrified guests huddled against the lakeside window, until her gaze rested directly on her sister.
Jessica stood paralyzed near the glass overlooking the dock. Her face had drained of every drop of color, turning a sickly, papery gray. Her hands were trembling violently at her sides, her eyes darting frantically toward the front door as if searching for an escape route that no longer existed.
"Jessica," Emily said, her voice dropping into a register so quiet, so flat, and so absolute that the entire room seemed to hold its collective breath. "Look at me."
Jessica couldn't do it. She kept her eyes glued to the floorboards, her chest heaving as tears of pure panic began to track through her makeup.
Emily turned the front summary page of the agreement, flipping to the final legal execution page at the back of the packet.
stamped directly over the notary seal was an official state endorsement and a red date stamp: JUNE 12TH, 2026.
Three months ago.
On June 12th, 2026, Colonel Emily Carter was commanding an armored battalion tactical exercise in the eastern province of Poland, completely isolated from civilian comms, living out of a field tent thousands of miles away from American soil.

Someone in her own family hadn't just listed her house for sale while she was deployed.
They had forged her signature on official state conveyances, generated a fraudulent death certificate, declared her dead in a foreign war zone, and were in the middle of closing a two-million-dollar cash sale to liquidate her private estate before she ever set foot back in the country.
