Chapter 6 - THE SLIP AND THE RISING HAND

Marcus launched the strike.

His right fist cut through the humid summer air with a heavy, rushing whoosh of displaced atmosphere, accelerating toward the left side of Jessica’s face.

In his mind, he already saw the conclusion: the satisfying impact of his knuckles against flesh, the snap of her head, the collapse of her body, and the terrified submission of the crowd.

Then, the universe unraveled beneath him.

At the exact instant the strike reached the terminal half of its arc—when it was less than eight inches from her jaw—Jessica moved.

It was not a frantic evasion; it was an act of pure, surgical biomechanics.

Her lead left foot shifted three inches off-line to the outside, stepping along a forty-five-degree vector. Her torso rotated a fraction of an inch, allowing Marcus’s massive fist to whistle harmlessly through empty air, brushing past her cheek by a margin of less than two centimeters.

Simultaneously, her right hand began to rise from her hip.

Her movement was impossibly fast, completely invisible to the untrained eyes of the screaming relatives on the lawn. Her palm was open, her fingers curved into a hardened structural wedge, her elbow tucked tight to her ribs to transfer the entire rotational power of her hips directly into the strike.

Marcus’s eyes widened in sudden, animal panic.

In that final, frozen micro-second, the drunken fog cleared from his brain. He felt the terrifying void where her face was supposed to be; he saw her hand rising with the speed and precision of a hydraulic piston; he realized with bone-chilling clarity that the quiet desk clerk had read his movement before he had even launched it.

She had reacted too early. Too cleanly. Too lethally.

His knuckles swept through empty space inches from her ear as the video cut to black, leaving twenty screaming relatives hanging over the edge of a violent, shattering revelation.
