Chapter 1 - The Door Opened From The Inside

The first thing Evelyn Carter heard was Lily gasp.
Then cold water hit her head.
The entire pitcher.
It ran through Evelyn’s hair, down the back of her blouse, across the knees of her black work pants and onto the polished marble beneath her.
Vanessa Bennett stood above her holding the empty glass pitcher.
“Thieves belong on the floor.”
Evelyn did not move.
She had already learned that standing too quickly around Vanessa could turn humiliation into a story about aggression.
“Give me the key,” Vanessa said.
Evelyn lifted her eyes.
“No.”
Lily stood near the staircase.
Eight years old.
Frozen.
Vanessa saw her.
“Go upstairs.”
Lily ran the opposite direction.
“Lily!”
Too late.
She disappeared down the hall.
Vanessa bent toward Evelyn.
“You have no idea what you just walked into.”
“I walked into a study.”
“You broke into my father-in-law’s private room.”
“The door opened.”
“With a stolen key.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“I didn't steal it.”
Footsteps came fast from the hallway.
Daniel Bennett appeared with Lily clutching the back of his jacket.
He saw Evelyn kneeling in water.
Then Vanessa raising the pitcher again.
Daniel crossed the foyer and ripped it out of his wife’s hand.
The pitcher hit the marble and rolled beneath a chair.
“What did she do?”
Vanessa pointed at Evelyn.
“She was in your father’s locked study.”
Daniel stopped.
Not because Evelyn was there.
Because nobody had entered that room since Henry Bennett died eight months earlier.
At least Daniel believed nobody had.
He looked at Evelyn.
“Is that true?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Someone gave me the key.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Small.
Immediate.
Daniel caught it.
“Who?”
Vanessa moved first.
She grabbed Evelyn by the hair.
Evelyn cried out and twisted away.
Vanessa shoved her.
Evelyn hit the marble with both hands.
Daniel caught Vanessa around the shoulders before she could move again.
“What the hell are you doing?”
“She needs to leave this house.”
Lily hid behind him.
Daniel stepped between Vanessa and Evelyn.
“Stay back.”
“Daniel, you don't understand.”
“No. I really don't.”
Evelyn pushed wet hair away from her face.
Daniel looked at her.
“Who gave you the key?”
Before she could answer, something clicked upstairs.
Everyone looked toward the second floor.
Henry Bennett’s study door moved.
Slowly.
Opening inward.
The room beyond remained black.
Daniel released Vanessa.
Nobody stood in the doorway.
Then a man’s voice came from inside.
Calm.
Older than Daniel.
“Evelyn. Bring Daniel upstairs.”
Daniel’s face emptied.
Vanessa went pale.
Evelyn looked toward the darkness.
Lily whispered:
“Dad?”
Daniel did not answer.
The unseen man spoke again.
“Just Daniel.”
Vanessa caught Daniel’s arm.
“No.”
He looked at her hand.
Then at her face.
“You know who’s in there.”
She released him.
That was enough.
Daniel started toward the staircase.
Vanessa blocked the first step.
“Please.”
He stared at her.
She had called him Daniel thousands of times.
She had rarely said please like that.
“Who is upstairs?”
Vanessa’s mouth moved.
Nothing came.
From behind the study door, the man said:
“Twelve years, Danny.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Evelyn watched recognition arrive before he said the name.
“Owen?”
The study went silent.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
And Daniel slowly turned toward his wife.
“My brother is inside my father’s study.”
May you like
He looked at Evelyn next.
“And both of you knew he was coming.”
