Chapter 8 - The Cornered Predator

"You put something else in the tea today, didn't you, Eleanor?" I whispered, taking two steps backward toward the hallway.
Eleanor’s posture snapped straight.
Knowing the truth was completely exposed, she abandoned every pretense of innocence. She reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out a small, glass vial—the remaining neurotoxin liquid—along with a long, heavy kitchen utility knife she had hidden under her knitting blanket.
"No one is leaving this house until this is settled," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a raspy, terrifying hiss.
"Mom, drop the knife!" Julian screamed, stepping between me and his mother, expanding his arms to shield me. "Are you insane?!"
"Move out of the way, Julian!" Eleanor ordered, her eyes wild and bloodshot. "If she leaves this house with those papers, our lives are over! David Vance will destroy us! The police will take everything! I protected you for thirty years, and I will protect you today!"
"You're not protecting me!" Julian roared, tears streaming down his face. "You're a monster!"
Outside, tires screeched on the driveway.
A black luxury sedan slammed to a halt outside our front window, followed immediately by the blaring sirens of two San Diego Police Department patrol cars.
David Vance had realized I was serious on the phone. In a frantic attempt to stop Eleanor from ruining his empire, he had driven straight to our house—unaware that Sienna had already dispatched emergency services to our address.
The front door burst open.
David Vance stepped into the entryway, his expensive designer coat wet from the drizzling rain outside, flanked by two uniformed police officers holding drawn sidearms.
"Eleanor, stop!" David Vance yelled, scanning the chaotic scene in the kitchen. "The police know everything! The lab sent the mass spec scan to the District Attorney twenty minutes ago!"
Eleanor looked at David Vance—the man who had abandoned her thirty years ago, the man standing beside the police officers who had come to arrest her.
A choked, hysterical laugh escaped her throat.
"You coward," Eleanor spat, tears finally spilling from her cold eyes. "You came here to save yourself!"
"Drop the weapon, ma'am!" the police officer shouted, training his gun directly on Eleanor. "Drop the knife right now!"
Eleanor looked at Julian one last time—a long, agonizing look of tragic obsession and ruined pride.

"I gave you everything, Julian," she whispered.
She lowered the knife, opened the small glass vial, and poured the remaining dark liquid directly onto her tongue before anyone could move to stop her.
