Chapter 7 - The Truth Unravels

I turned to my husband, my heart breaking for what I was about to do to his world.

"Julian... sit down," I said softly.

"What is this, Nora?" Julian asked, looking from my tear-streaked face to his mother’s rigid posture. "Mom, what's happening?"

"Nora is having an episode, Julian," Eleanor said instantly, her tone reverting back to her smooth, protective maternal voice. "She’s been under a lot of stress with her health lately. She’s making wild accusations—"

"I have the video, Julian!" I raised my voice, sliding my phone across the counter toward him. "I have the toxicology reports from Sienna’s hospital! And I have the legal files from your mother’s locked filing cabinet in the basement!"

Julian picked up the phone, pressing play on the video.

He watched in silence as his mother poisoned my tea. His brow furrowed, his chest heaving as he replayed the clip three times.

"Mom..." Julian's voice trembled, his face turning pale. "What... what is she putting in her mug?"

"It’s just an herbal supplement for her digestion!" Eleanor insisted, stepping toward him. "Julian, darling, listen to me—"

"It’s an industrial immunosuppressant, Julian!" I yelled, pulling the brown accordion file from my bag and throwing the legal documents onto the kitchen island. "Supplied by David Vance! Your biological father!"

Julian froze as if he had been struck by lightning.

"My... my father?" he stammered, staring at the legal settlement from 1996. "My father died when I was three..."

"He didn't die, Julian," I said gently, stepping beside him and holding his shaking arm. "He’s alive. He owns Vance Bio-Chemicals in Chula Vista. Your mother made a deal with him thirty years ago to hide his identity in exchange for monthly payouts. And six months ago, they made a new deal: your mother would poison me to pass my father’s eight-million-dollar trust to you, so you could buy out Vance Bio-Chemicals, while David Vance kept his reputation clean!"

Julian looked at his mother, his eyes wide with horror and profound betrayal.

"Mom..." Julian whispered, tears filling his eyes. "Tell me this isn't true. Tell me you didn't do this to my wife!"

Eleanor looked at her son, her lip trembling slightly, but her eyes remained cold and unyielding.

"I did it for you, Julian!" Eleanor yelled, slamming her hand onto the counter. "Everything I ever did was for you! I raised you in poverty while that bastard lived like a king! You were supposed to be powerful! You were supposed to be rich! She was holding you back with her mundane, middle-class life!"

Julian stumbled back as if his mother had slapped him across the face.

"You poisoned Nora..." Julian breathed, his voice cracking with pure agony. "You poisoned the mother of my child..."

Suddenly, my phone buzzed violently against the kitchen island.

It was an emergency text from Sienna at the lab:

NORA DO NOT GO HOME. THE MASS SPEC MATCHED DAVID VANCE’S PATENT. BUT WE JUST FOUND A SECOND COMPOUND IN YOUR BLOOD WORK. IT’S AN ACUTE NEUROTOXIN. IF YOU’VE DRUNK THE TEA TODAY, CALL AN AMBULANCE IMMEDIATELY.

I looked down at the mug of steam lingering on the table in front of me.

May you like

Eleanor hadn't just used the immunosuppressant today. Realizing the net was closing in, she had stepped up the timeline.

She was going to finish me off before the sun went down.
