Chapter 7 - EMILY’S BAG

A deputy escorted Emily inside to collect essentials.

Ryan objected.

He was told to remain outside.

That may have been the first instruction in years he could not negotiate.

Emily returned with a backpack.

Nothing else.

“Where are your shoes?” I asked.

She looked down as if noticing for the first time.

Diane whispered:

“They’re upstairs.”

Brooks sent the second deputy back for them.

Emily’s medical examination later documented bruising to her upper arm, torso and cheek.

No catastrophic injuries.

No cinematic hospital scene.

Just the ordinary physical record of a marriage that had become violent.

The emergency call mattered.

So did the witnesses.

So did the bat impact.

So did Ryan shoving me.

But what changed the case was Emily talking.

Once she began, she did not stop.

She described Ryan blocking the bedroom door that morning.

Taking her phone.

Grabbing her by the hair during an argument.

Throwing the packed bag downstairs.

Threatening to “make sure everyone knows you’re unstable” if she tried to leave.

Then she described earlier incidents.

Photographs existed.

Messages existed.

Her clinic manager could verify Ryan’s interference with work.

A neighbor had once heard screaming.

Nothing alone was a miracle.

Together, it formed a pattern.

Brooks asked whether Emily wanted information about an emergency protective order.

She said yes.

Ryan laughed.

“You’re really doing this?”

Emily looked at him.

For the first time that day, her voice was calm.

May you like

“Yes.”

That one word hurt him more than anything I could have done with the baseball bat.
