Chapter 11 - EMILY STARTED OVER

Emily did not return to the estate.
Her first apartment was small.
One bedroom.
Second-floor walk-up.
The heating system rattled at night.
She loved it.
The first evening I helped her move in, she stood in the kitchen holding the new key.
“What?” I asked.
She looked embarrassed.
“I forgot what it felt like to have a door only I control.”
I had to look away.
Ryan fought the separation.
Then the divorce.
Then property issues.
Then his public image.
He claimed Emily had been influenced by me.
That she was fragile.
That one argument had been exaggerated into a criminal case.
The recorded 911 call made that difficult.
So did Emily’s documentation.
So did his parents’ eventual testimony.
The legal process did not produce instant justice.
There were hearings.
Protective-order extensions.
Negotiations.
Evidence disputes.
Ryan’s counsel argued the bat strike was intimidation, not attempted assault.
Prosecutors focused on conduct they could prove.
Ryan faced consequences for assaultive behavior and related domestic offenses through a process that unfolded over many months.
Emily obtained a final protective order.
Their divorce was completed later.
She returned to full-time work.
Not immediately.
Her clinic welcomed her back gradually.
The first time she treated a child learning to walk after surgery, she called me afterward and cried in the parking lot.
“I forgot I was good at something.”
Ryan had never taken her ability.
May you like
He had only surrounded it with enough fear that she stopped seeing it.
That difference mattered.
