Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME LATER

Adrian confronted the timeline rather than Vanessa. She remained under investigation for the attack on Mia and the confinement of Daniel Reyes, and Rebecca advised him not to create an opportunity for private explanations to replace evidence.

He began with employment records.

Vanessa told Adrian she previously worked in luxury hospitality and estate management. That was true. She omitted a consulting role with Bluewater Facilities, where she handled high-value client relationships and property acquisitions.

She worked there during Claire’s final year.

Her supervisor was Graham Ellis.

Adrian had never known they worked together before he met Vanessa.

He remembered their introduction at a charity dinner. Graham invited her as a guest of a mutual acquaintance, and Vanessa approached Adrian with unusual sensitivity about Claire’s death. She never pressured him to discuss it. She seemed comfortable around Mia from the beginning.

Adrian had mistaken preparation for understanding.

The first major reveal came from Bluewater’s ownership records.

Graham controlled thirty percent through a private investment vehicle. Vanessa held another twenty percent through a family trust. The remaining shares belonged to a holding company administered by Martin Hale.

The people approving Mercer maintenance payments were also the people receiving them.

Bluewater was a related-party business disguised as an independent contractor.

That explained the invoices.

It did not fully explain Mia’s trust.

David Kim, Rebecca’s forensic accountant, traced a $12 million loan from the trust to a Mercer subsidiary. The subsidiary transferred most of it to Bluewater as advance payment for a luxury development project that had never broken ground.

Interest accrued against Mia’s trust.

Bluewater used the money to acquire land.

Graham and Vanessa gained ownership interests.

Adrian was supposed to remain unaware until the next independent audit.

That audit was scheduled in eleven days.

Suddenly the urgency made sense.

Graham and Vanessa had limited time to remove records, explain the missing money or establish a new authority structure before accountants discovered the transactions.

Then Adrian found the page that made the attack on Mia part of the financial scheme.

A draft emergency guardianship memorandum described Adrian as unstable, physically aggressive and unable to provide a safe environment for his daughter.

The draft referenced “a recent pool incident involving the minor.”

It had been created two days before the attack.

Vanessa pushed Mia into the water on Thursday.

Someone prepared a document describing the incident on Tuesday.

The drowning was not simply a panicked attempt to silence a child who discovered Daniel.

There had been a plan involving Mia before she reached the pool.
