Chapter 11 - THE BOARDROOM

Adrian called an emergency Mercer Holdings board meeting under independent legal supervision. Graham had been suspended but retained counsel and shareholder rights that allowed him to attend through a representative. Vanessa did not attend; her attorney submitted a statement denying that she intended Mia serious harm and claiming Adrian misunderstood the pool incident.
Adrian refused to make the meeting about their relationship.
He made it about records.
David presented Bluewater’s ownership structure, the inflated maintenance contracts, the suspicious land options and the trust-backed loans. Rebecca explained the conflicting trustee approvals and the emergency guardianship memorandum prepared before Mia was pushed into the pool.
The board’s independent directors ordered preservation of every Graham-controlled system.
They also suspended all future transactions involving Bluewater pending review.
That was the first meaningful step toward stopping the financial mechanism.
Then Graham’s attorney produced an old email from Claire.
The message appeared to approve the early land partnership and instruct Howard Bell to proceed despite questions about valuation.
Adrian felt the room shift.
If authentic, Claire herself had authorized the first disputed investment.
Graham’s attorney argued that subsequent transactions followed a strategy Claire designed and that Adrian was now distorting her intentions because of a domestic conflict.
Rebecca asked for the original email.
The attorney supplied a PDF.
David requested the message headers and source file.
The attorney said they would be produced later.
Adrian recognized the tactic. Delay verification while presenting the document as settled fact.
Then a second challenge arrived.
Graham’s attorney claimed Adrian’s physical confrontation at the pool demonstrated the instability described in the guardianship memorandum. He presented still photographs showing Graham falling into the broken chair and Vanessa beneath the collapsed curtain.
The images excluded Mia being pushed underwater.
They excluded Graham grabbing Adrian first.
They excluded Vanessa rushing toward him.
Adrian remained silent while Rebecca asked the board to view the complete recording.
The room watched Mia lose her grip on the pool edge.
Watched Adrian enter the water.
Watched him lift her out.
Watched Graham seize his collar.
Watched the two defensive confrontations.
Nobody spoke when it ended.
The edited version collapsed.
But the Claire email remained a problem.
If she truly approved the first investment, it could weaken the financial case even if the later concealment and attack remained indefensible.
After the meeting, Adrian received a message from Howard Bell’s attorney.
Howard wanted to correct his earlier account.
He had remembered something about Claire’s final instruction.
She did not merely ask him to wait.
She sent a separate letter stating the investment could proceed only after an independent property valuation.
Graham’s email omitted that condition.
Howard still had the letter.
Before Rebecca could arrange delivery, Graham’s attorney filed an emergency petition seeking to remove Adrian temporarily from management of the disputed trust transactions.

The board had stopped the next loan.
Graham responded by trying to remove the man who stopped it.
