Chapter 4 - The Groom at the Door

Javier came to my apartment at 8:07 a.m.

He arrived still wearing his black tuxedo from the night before, bow tie loose, hair messy, eyes red from either panic or lack of sleep. Carmen stood behind him in her gold sequin gown, covered now by a cream coat, trying to look wounded instead of guilty.

I saw them through the peephole and felt my hands go cold.

Alexander stepped beside me.

“Open it.”

I did.

Javier’s face changed the moment he saw him.

“Mr. Vale.”

Alexander said nothing.

Carmen lifted her chin. “We need to see Sofia. This misunderstanding has gone far enough.”

The word misunderstanding almost made me laugh.

Javier looked past us into the apartment. “Sofia needs to come home with me.”

“She is not your property,” I said.

His eyes flicked to me, annoyed, then back to Alexander. He understood power only when it wore a suit and a man’s face.

“Sir,” Javier said, “I love your daughter. Last night got emotional.”

Alexander’s voice stayed quiet.

“Emotional?”

Carmen stepped forward. “Sofia refused to respect marital expectations. In our family, assets are handled collectively. She became hysterical.”

I opened the door wider.

“Assets?”

Javier swallowed.

Carmen realized too late that she had said the important part in front of the wrong witness.

Alexander took one step closer.

“You wanted her condo.”

Carmen’s polished expression faltered.

“That is not how I would phrase it.”

“That is how my daughter phrased it after crawling to her mother’s door in a torn wedding dress.”

Javier’s face flushed. “She’s exaggerating.”

Alexander looked at him for a long moment.

Then he held up his phone.

“The hotel has already been contacted. The hallway cameras are being preserved. The suite key logs are being pulled. Every guest who entered that room will be identified. Every message you sent my daughter about property will be produced. And if you take one step toward her, I will make sure the only wedding-night memory you have left is answering questions under oath.”

Carmen’s face went pale.

Javier tried again. “You can’t destroy my family over one argument.”

Alexander’s eyes hardened.

“You watched your mother hurt my daughter for refusing to sign over property. Your family is already destroyed. I’m just documenting it.”

Behind him, Carmen reached for Javier’s arm.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

Not remorseful.

Afraid.

There is a difference.
