Chapter 3 - The Father Who Arrived

Alexander answered on the fourth ring, voice rough with sleep.
“Elena?”
I had not heard him say my name in years.
I took one breath.
“Your daughter was almost killed on her wedding night.”
Silence.
Then his voice changed.
“Send me the address.”
He was at my apartment thirty minutes later.
I opened the door before he knocked a second time. Alexander stood in the hallway wearing a wrinkled blue dress shirt and dark pants, gray hair disordered, his face pale in a way I had never seen. He looked past me into the living room.
Then he saw Sofia.
For all the damage between us, I will never forget what happened to him in that second.
The businessman disappeared.
The ex-husband disappeared.
The cold, proud man who had made every conversation a legal negotiation vanished.
Only the father remained.
He crossed the room and dropped to one knee beside the couch, careful not to startle her.
“Baby girl.”
Sofia opened her eyes.
“Dad.”
Her voice broke on the word, and Alexander bent his head like it had struck him.
He did not grab her. He did not demand details. He held out his hand and waited for her to choose it. When she did, he looked at the marks on her arms, the torn gown, the dried blood near her lip, and something in his face went terrifyingly still.
“Who did this?”
Sofia looked toward me first.
I nodded.
“His mother,” she whispered. “Carmen.”
Alexander’s jaw tightened once.
“And Javier?”
“He was outside the door,” Sofia said. “He told her not to hit my face too much because people would notice.”
I watched the sentence enter Alexander.
It did not explode.
It froze.
He stood slowly and turned toward me.
“Hospital first.”
Sofia panicked. “No. They said—”
Alexander crouched again, lowering his voice.
“No one from that family gets near you. Not tonight. Not ever without a court order and armed security between you.”
He took out his phone.
“I’m calling Dr. Whitman. Private entrance. Full exam. Documentation. Then my attorney.”
I stared at him.
“Alexander—”
He looked at me.
“Do not protect my feelings tonight, Elena. We both failed to stop this before it happened. We do not fail now.”
For the first time in years, I agreed with him completely.
By 4:15 a.m., Sofia was in a private medical suite with a trauma nurse, a physician, and a female police liaison who spoke softly and never rushed her.

By 4:32 a.m., Alexander’s attorney had placed a legal hold on every communication connected to the Robles wedding.
By sunrise, Carmen Robles had no idea the storm she had started had already reached her door.
