Chapter 7 - The House After

We did not go home for nine days.

Chloe stayed two nights under observation. Daniel stayed longer. I slept in chairs, showered in hospital bathrooms, answered questions from detectives, and learned that adrenaline leaves slowly when it has been holding a mother upright.

When we finally returned, the kitchen smelled like disinfectant, fresh paint, and absence.

The cinnamon plug-ins were gone. The garage had been professionally cleared. Daniel’s car was removed for evidence review and later returned with a smell I never fully trusted again. The broken mug was gone, but I still saw it on the floor every time I stepped near the island.

Chloe stood at the front door and would not cross the threshold.

I did not force her.

Daniel knelt carefully beside her.

“We can leave,” he said.

She looked surprised. “We don’t have to stay?”

“No,” I said. “A house doesn’t get to be more important than you.”

So we left.

For three months, we rented a furnished townhouse across town while Chloe started therapy and Daniel began his own. Not because he caused what Rachel did, but because he had spent years confusing rescue with love. He needed to understand why Rachel could still reach into our life through his guilt.

Rachel was charged with multiple offenses connected to the break-in, exposure, and attempted framing. The case moved slowly, then quickly after her attorney saw the evidence stack. The fob. The camera footage. Chloe’s statement. The house readings. Her messages to Daniel, including one from the night before that said, You’ll see what happens when you pick Allison over blood.

Blood.

People use that word like it means safety.

Rachel used it like a threat.

Daniel’s parents tried once to ask for compassion.

“Rachel is sick,” his mother said over the phone.

Daniel answered while I sat beside him.

“So was Chloe.”

The line went quiet.

Then he ended the call.

It was the first time I heard him sound like the man who labeled our breaker box and taught our daughter fire drills. Calm. Gentle. Unmoved by manipulation.

Chloe heard too.

That mattered more than he knew.
