Chapter 4 - Rachel’s Key

Rachel had asked for our emergency fob six months earlier.

Not directly.

That would have been too obvious.

She had been staying with us after her divorce, sleeping in the guest room and crying into mugs of tea while Daniel defended her to everyone.

“She’s having a hard year,” he would say.

Rachel’s hard year had somehow become our responsibility.

She borrowed my clothes for interviews she never attended. Used Daniel’s credit card for “temporary expenses.” Criticized my work schedule in front of Chloe, then smiled when Daniel told her to stop. She knew the rhythm of our house because she had lived inside it long enough to memorize our weaknesses.

Chloe off the bus at 3:05.

Daniel alone in the kitchen at 3:10.

Me across town until after five.

The fob disappeared the week Rachel moved out.

Daniel insisted we had misplaced it. Rachel even helped us look, making a little show of checking couch cushions and kitchen drawers.

I had forgotten the fob because ordinary life is full of missing things.

Now it sat in an evidence bag.

At the hospital, doctors confirmed what Officer Vance had already suspected. Chloe and Daniel had been exposed to something dangerous in the air. Daniel had received a heavier dose because he had been home longer. Chloe arrived just in time to feel dizzy, call me, and collapse before she understood what was happening.

She had saved them by breaking the routine.

When Chloe woke hours later, I was beside her bed with both hands around hers.

Her eyes opened slowly.

“Mom?”

“I’m here.”

“Is Dad okay?”

“He’s with the doctors.”

She swallowed. “It smelled sweet.”

“I know, baby.”

“I thought the cinnamon thing was broken.”

My body went still. “What do you mean?”

Chloe blinked, tired and confused. “Aunt Rachel said it smelled weird, so she fixed it.”

I kept my face calm for Chloe.

Inside, something cold spread through me.

“When did you see Aunt Rachel?”

Chloe looked toward the ceiling, trying to remember.

“Today. Before Dad fell down. She said she forgot something from when she lived with us. Dad told her she couldn’t keep coming over without asking.”

I kissed Chloe’s fingers and told her she had done everything right.

Then I stepped into the hallway and called Officer Hayes.

This time, my voice did not shake.

“My daughter saw Rachel at the house.”

The silence on the other end lasted only a second.

Then Hayes said, “We need that statement.”
