Chapter 6 - TWENTY MINUTES

The first vehicle into the driveway belonged to Miriam.
A sheriff’s cruiser arrived behind her.
Marcus was still standing near the pantry camera. Rachel had taken out her phone and was searching for information about cloud recordings.
Daniel remained near the doorway.
When the knock came, all three froze.
I slowly pulled myself upright using the counter.
Marcus recovered first.
“Let me handle this.”
He opened the kitchen door and smiled at Deputy Nolan as though welcoming an expected visitor.
“Everything’s fine. My mother fell and became upset.”
Miriam stepped around him.
She saw the broken bowl, the bruising beginning along my arm, and the forged document on the counter.
“Evelyn, did you ask these people to come?”
“No.”
“Did Marcus push you?”
“Yes.”
Rachel began speaking over me.
“She’s confused. That’s exactly why we need the power of attorney.”
Miriam looked at her.
“The document your brother submitted to escrow this morning?”
Rachel stopped.
Marcus turned toward her.
He had not realized Miriam already knew about the attempted transfer.
Deputy Nolan separated us and requested medical assistance. A second deputy arrived before anyone was taken from the property.
There was no dramatic confession.
Marcus said the contact was accidental.
Rachel called the document a family draft.
Daniel claimed he had not read it.
Then Miriam opened the protected recording on her tablet.
The video showed Marcus shoving me twice, demanding account information, presenting the document, and saying older people became confused and signed things.
It captured Rachel threatening to take the money anyway.
It captured Daniel watching.
