Chapter 5 - THE ACCOUNT THEY HAD ALREADY OPENED
They had not created the forged power of attorney that morning.
The plan had begun weeks earlier.
Marcus opened the family asset management account using a company connected to his renovation business. Rachel was listed as an authorized signer.
They submitted the false document to the escrow company and requested that the next farm installment—$180,000—be transferred into that account.
Their email described me as increasingly forgetful.
They claimed I had become vulnerable to manipulation by farm employees and advisers who wanted to steal the sale proceeds.
Rachel attached a statement saying she had recently found me confused inside the farmhouse.
She had not visited in four months.
Marcus provided a copy of my driver’s license taken from paperwork I once gave him to register a trailer.
They expected the transfer to occur quietly. Once the first installment arrived, the power of attorney could be used to pursue the larger investment account and perhaps challenge the employee trust.
The escrow officer noticed that the signature differed from the one on the original sale agreement.
She also saw that the account receiving the money had been opened only nine days earlier.
Instead of rejecting the request immediately, she asked for in-person confirmation.
That triggered the confrontation in my kitchen.
My children were not asking me to share money.
They were trying to force me to validate a theft already in progress.
Daniel, Rachel’s husband, stood in the kitchen doorway throughout the argument. He wore a plaid shirt and kept looking toward the driveway.
He had driven Rachel there.
He later claimed he believed they were coming to discuss a family loan.
But when Marcus displayed the forged paper, Daniel did not look surprised.
“You know what that is?” I asked him.
He lowered his eyes.
Rachel turned sharply.
“Stay out of this.”
Daniel obeyed.
