Chapter 10 - The Protector’s Stand

Mrs. Grayson’s calm facade flickered for the very first time. Hearing Nathan articulate the true nature of her presence in the house shattered her illusion of absolute control. She realized that the absent father she had planned to manipulate was not going to break under psychological pressure.

She reached her hand behind her back, her fingers subtle as she reached toward the inside coat rack near the door, likely reaching for a weapon or a set of keys to attempt an escape through the back garage.

"You're making a mistake, Nathan," Mrs. Grayson said, her voice finally dropping its artificial politeness, revealing a hard, desperate edge. "You have no idea who I work for."

"I don't care who you work for," Nathan said evenly.

Without breaking eye contact, Nathan reached down and lifted Emma smoothly into his left arm, pulling her tight against his chest. Her small arms wrapped around his neck, burying her face into the collar of his wet business coat, finally feeling safe after sixty days of torment.

With his right hand, Nathan reached into his coat pocket, pulling out his heavy silver smartphone. The screen illuminated the darkness of the rainstorm with a crisp, bright light. With a single tap of his thumb, he activated an automated emergency signal—a high-level corporate security protocol linked directly to federal authorities and local law enforcement that he had set up for his firm's executive protection.

Across the driveway, the sound of distant sirens began to wail through the storm, cutting through the thunder over the Charleston coast.

Mrs. Grayson froze in the doorway, her face going completely pale as the red and blue reflections of approaching emergency vehicles began to flash against the rain-slick trees at the end of the long driveway. Her leverage was gone. Her operation was ruined.

Nathan stood tall in the pouring rain, holding his daughter tightly against his heart. The dark, stormy night was still raging around them, but the nightmare inside the house was finally over. He turned his back on the dry, terrified woman in the doorway and walked toward the light of the approaching vehicles, shielding his daughter from the storm once and for all.
