Chapter 13 - Lily Told The Story Without Protecting Any Of Us

The investigator spoke with Lily three days later.
I sat beside her.
Ryan did not attend.
Margaret wanted to.
I said no.
Lily colored while the investigator asked simple questions.
“Who was inside the store when you got there?”
“Uncle Ryan. Me.”
“Then?”
“Owen.”
“Then?”
“Grandma.”
“Did anyone tell you to leave?”
“Owen told me to sit near the front.”
“Why?”
“Adults were fighting.”
Reasonable.
“Who locked the door?”
“Uncle Ryan.”
“When?”
“Before Grandma came.”
“Did he say why?”
“He said Owen wasn't leaving.”
“Did you feel trapped?”
Lily thought.
“At first no.”
That mattered.
Then:
“After the fire yes.”
“Where were you when the smoke started?”
“Behind the counter.”
“Why?”
“I dropped my bracelet.”
I stared.
That tiny fact.
Not hiding.
Not chasing secrets.
An eight-year-old retrieving a bracelet while three adults assumed someone else had her.
“Did Uncle Ryan see you go behind the counter?”
“I don't know.”
“Did Grandma?”
“I don't know.”
“Did Owen?”
“Yes.”
“What did he do?”
“He yelled for me.”
That explained why he remained inside.
“What happened?”
“Uncle Ryan took Grandma out.”
“Did you follow?”
“I tried.”
“Then?”
“I couldn't see.”
Her hand stopped coloring.
I rubbed her back.
“You're okay.”
She nodded.
The investigator gave her time.
Then:
“Did you hear Uncle Ryan outside?”
Lily looked at me first.
I kept my face neutral.
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
“Nobody’s in there.”
I felt her back tighten under my hand.
“How did that make you feel?”
“Like he forgot me.”
Ryan had not forgotten her exactly.
Sometimes exact language hurts more.
Afterward, Lily asked:
“Can I see him?”
I stopped.
“Ryan?”
She nodded.
“When?”
“Not today.”
“Why?”
“I want to ask him something.”
“What?”
She looked at the elevator doors.
“Why he took Grandma first.”
I did not answer for him.
That evening I called Ryan.
He picked up immediately.
“She wants to see you.”
Silence.
“When?”
“Tomorrow.”
“Claire…”
“What?”
“I don't know what to say.”
“Good.”
He breathed out.
“Helpful.”
“Don't go in with a speech.”
“What if she asks why I left?”
“Answer.”
“What if the answer hurts her?”
“It already does.”
He went quiet.
Then:
“Will you be there?”
“Yes.”
He sounded relieved.
I stopped him.
“For Lily. Not to help you.”
“I know.”
The next day Ryan came to my house.
No gifts.
I had warned him.
Lily sat on the couch.
He stayed standing until she pointed to the chair across from her.
He sat.
“Why did you take Grandma out first?”
Ryan looked at me.
I said nothing.
Then he looked at Lily.
“Because she was closest to me.”
“Did you know where I was?”
“I thought you were behind us.”
“But you didn't check.”
“No.”
“Why?”
Ryan swallowed.
“Because I was scared.”
Lily frowned.
“You're big.”
Ryan almost smiled.
“I know.”
“That doesn't mean you can't be scared,” I said.
She looked at me.
Then back to him.
“Why did you say nobody was inside?”
Ryan's face collapsed slightly.
He did not soften the answer.
“Because I thought Owen was the person screaming.”
“And?”
“I was angry at him.”
“So you didn't want Ethan to help him.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
“No.”
Lily stared.
“That's mean.”
“Yes.”
She thought for a long time.
Then:
“I don't want you to hug me.”
Ryan’s eyes filled.
“Okay.”
“I still love you.”
He looked surprised.
Lily continued:
“But I don't want you to take me anywhere.”
Ryan nodded.
“Okay.”
May you like
That was the only promise she asked for.
He made it.
