Chapter 1 - The Man Who Walked Out After My Daughter

The first scream came from inside the store.
Ethan heard it before I did.
I was still pushing through the crowd when he ran toward the shattered front window.
Then Ryan grabbed him by the shirt.
“Nobody’s in there!”
Another scream cut through the smoke.
My daughter’s.
“Lily!”
Ethan punched Ryan across the face, tore free, and disappeared through the doorway.
I reached my brother as he stumbled back.
“What did you do?”
Ryan looked at me.
Smoke rolled behind him.
“Claire—”
“What did you do?”
He didn't answer.
Thirty seconds later Ethan emerged carrying Lily.
Her face was streaked with soot and tears.
I took her from him so fast I barely managed to thank him.
“Mom.”
“I’ve got you.”
She wrapped both arms around my neck.
I checked her face, hands, hair, anything I could see.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
Ryan had gone completely still.
Lily saw him.
Her body tightened against mine.
Then she raised one shaking hand and pointed.
“He locked the door.”
I turned slowly.
Ryan’s face changed.
“Lily—”
He stepped toward us.
I put her behind me and slapped him.
“Don’t touch her.”
His mother came through the crowd immediately.
My mother too.
Margaret Carter grabbed my arm.
“Claire, stop it.”
I jerked free.
“Stay away from her.”
“You don't know what happened.”
“My daughter just told me.”
“She’s frightened.”
“Of Ryan.”
Margaret reached for me again.
I shoved her off.
She fell onto one hand beside the curb.
Ryan moved.
Then stopped.
Broken glass crunched inside the storefront.
Slow footsteps.
Everyone nearest the entrance turned.
A pair of scorched dress shoes appeared through the smoke.
Dark trousers.
A man’s lower body.
His face stayed hidden behind the rolling gray.
He stopped at the threshold.
“She wasn’t alone with Ryan.”
My mother lost all color.
Ryan whispered something I couldn't hear.
I held Lily tighter.
“Who are you?”
The man did not answer me.
He looked toward Ryan instead.
“You told him nobody was inside.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“I thought—”
“You knew I was.”
Margaret pushed herself upright.
“Don't.”
The man turned slightly toward her.
Even without seeing his face, I knew she recognized him.
I looked at my mother.
“Who is that?”
She ignored me.
“Get away from my family.”
The man laughed once.
It was a tired sound.
Then Lily moved behind me.
“Mom?”
“What?”
She was staring at him.
“He was in the back room.”
“With Ryan?”
She nodded.
“And Grandma.”
Margaret froze.
I looked from her to Ryan.
Neither spoke.
The man stepped one pace farther out of the smoke.
Still no face.
Then he said:
“Ryan didn't lock that door because of Lily.”
Ryan shut his eyes.
The man continued.
“He locked it because he didn't want me leaving before Margaret got there.”
I stared at my brother.
The fire behind us cracked louder.
Sirens were getting closer.
“What were you going to tell him?”
The stranger finally turned toward me.
May you like
His face remained blurred behind smoke and harsh orange light.
“Something your mother has spent twenty-two years making sure you never heard from me.”
