Chapter 8 - VANESSA CHOOSES A STORY
Vanessa attempted to become innocent before the evening ended.
She said Mason controlled the foundation.
She claimed she signed documents without understanding them.
She described herself as a military spouse pressured by powerful officers.
Some of that was true.
Mason was controlling.
He used rank and anger to dominate their marriage.
But being mistreated by him did not erase the choices she made against others.
Investigators recovered voice messages in which Vanessa mocked soldiers’ families who asked for rent assistance. She redirected scholarship funds to pay for the gala and approved fake consulting contracts after Mason explained exactly why they were needed.
She also knew my rank.
That was the betrayal I had not expected.
Four months before the gala, Vanessa received a background packet prepared for donors. My official biography was attached because the Inspector General’s office had previously reviewed another installation receiving foundation money.
She opened the file.
She forwarded it to Mason.
Her message said:
She really is a major general. Don’t let her know we found out. If she thinks we still see her as nobody, she may reveal why she’s coming.
Mason answered:
Then we give her a reason to lose control in public.
Vanessa had not mistaken me for a failure.
She had performed that belief.
The invitation, the cheap-seat placement, the tray and the champagne were designed to test whether I was investigating them and provoke me into compromising the operation.
When Mason grabbed my wrist, Vanessa smiled because she thought they had won.
