Chapter 1 - TEN SECONDS

“Ten.”

Colonel Mason Rourke held a champagne flute above my head while two hundred guests watched from beneath the chandeliers of Fort Ashford’s grand ballroom.

“Pick up the tray, Claire, or security removes you.”

Then he tipped the glass.

Ice-cold champagne ran through my hair, over my temple and down the collar of my royal-blue suit. Conversations died around us. A string quartet continued playing for three confused seconds before one violinist lowered her bow.

My sister Vanessa covered her mouth with one jeweled hand.

She was smiling.

“Don’t make a scene,” she whispered. “Mason invited you as a favor.”

Mason pointed toward the silver serving tray he had deliberately knocked from a young officer’s hands moments earlier.

“Eight.”

Guests shifted away from us. Senior officers stared into their drinks. Civilian contractors pretended to check their phones. On the stage, Major General Warren Pike—the commander of Fort Ashford—watched without intervening.

That silence interested me more than Mason’s cruelty.

My name is Claire Donovan. I was fifty-one years old and had served thirty years in the United States Army. I commanded a Defense Inspector General task force examining procurement fraud, retaliation and readiness failures across several installations.

Fort Ashford had been under investigation for eight months.

Mason believed I worked in a basement office processing supply reports.

My family believed it too.

I had never found it necessary to correct people who preferred contempt to curiosity.

Vanessa leaned closer.

“For once, stop pretending you matter.”

I wiped champagne from my face with a napkin.

Across the ballroom, Colonel Tessa Ward stood rigid beside the wall. She had submitted three complaints after mechanics were ordered to certify unsafe vehicles as mission-ready. All three complaints disappeared before reaching Washington.

Mason followed my gaze.

“You should let the colonel leave,” I said.

He laughed.

“You don’t give orders here.”

Then he grabbed my wrist.

The countdown continued.
