Chapter 6 - The Moving Truck Stayed Full

The officers asked Ryan to provide proof of ownership or lawful occupancy.

He showed them a photograph of Dad’s letter.

Officer Mason read it once.

“This document does not establish title.”

“My father paid for the house.”

“Do you have a transfer record?”

Ryan looked at me.

“She has it.”

“I don’t.”

He pointed toward the folder.

“What’s in there?”

“The actual purchase records.”

Ryan’s wife stepped down from the moving truck.

Megan had not heard the full conversation.

She looked from the officers to Ryan.

“You said Claire agreed.”

Ryan’s face tightened.

“She did. She’s changing the story.”

I played the voicemail.

We’re moving in tomorrow. Dad approved it. If you don’t like it, live somewhere else.

Megan stared at him.

“You told me she invited us.”

“I said we had permission.”

“From her?”

He did not answer.

Their two children remained safely inside the truck with Megan’s sister, who had followed in another car.

That mattered.

I did not want children used as leverage in a confrontation they did not create.

Megan asked whether the school enrollment paperwork also used my address.

Ryan told her to stop talking.

Officer Mason’s expression sharpened.

The second officer asked Ryan to step away from the doorway.

He obeyed this time.

Not because he respected my boundary.

Because every body camera was recording him discover how much evidence already existed.

The truck remained loaded.

Not one box entered my house.
