Chapter 1 - Dad Gave Me This House

Ryan dragged his suitcase across my doorway at 7:42 in the morning.

“Dad gave me this house!”

The wheels struck the new threshold with a hard scrape.

Before he could step onto the porch, Officer Mason moved directly into his path and raised one rigid palm.

“Do not cross this doorway.”

Ryan shoved the suitcase between the officer’s boots as though luggage could establish ownership.

Mason caught the handle, pulled it sideways, and sent it rolling back inside with one controlled movement.

The second officer stepped closer.

I remained near the porch railing holding my new keys and recording with my phone.

Ryan pointed at my face.

His finger shook with rage.

“You’ll be gone by noon.”

I raised the phone slightly.

“Keep talking.”

He lunged for it.

Officer Mason caught his wrist before he reached me, turned his arm downward, and guided him firmly against the doorframe without striking him.

Ryan cursed and tried to pull free.

I reached into my handbag and removed the sealed property folder.

“My name is the only one on the deed.”

The second officer looked at the folder.

Then at Ryan.

Mason released him only after forcing him one full step back.

Ryan immediately pulled out his phone.

“I’m calling Dad.”

The call rang.

Then stopped.

He tried again.

No answer.

I held one newly cut key in front of him.

“Call Dad again.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

I gave him the smallest smile.

“Ask what he signed.”

For the first time since the moving truck entered my driveway, my brother looked frightened.
