Chapter 14 - WHAT HAPPENED TO DIANE
Diane did eventually begin therapy.
Not because Ryan forced her.
He couldn’t.
Because the alternatives became lonely.
Laura would speak with her only under clear conditions.
Ryan ended conversations that became abusive.
Emily stopped defending herself entirely.
Susan refused triangulation.
Relatives began comparing stories.
Diane could still control her own behavior.
She could no longer control everyone’s access to information.
Six months after Claire’s birth, she apologized to Emily.
Not perfectly.
The first version contained:
“I’m sorry you felt—”
Emily stopped her.
“No.”
Diane looked offended.
Emily remained calm.
“If you’re apologizing for my feelings, don’t.”
Diane left angry.
Three weeks later, she tried again.
“I grabbed your wrist.”
“Yes.”
“I insulted you.”
“Yes.”
“I treated your plans for your own child as if they needed my approval.”
Emily said nothing.
Diane continued.
“I was wrong.”
There was no hug.
No sudden reconciliation.
Emily said:
“Thank you.”
That was enough.
