Chapter 11 - DIANE’S COUNTERMOVE

Diane did not accept the new boundaries quietly.

At first she tried anger.

Ryan ended the call.

Then guilt.

“I guess I’m not allowed to be a grandmother.”

Ryan answered:

“You’re allowed to be a grandmother. You’re not allowed to run our house.”

Then illness.

“My blood pressure is through the roof because of this.”

Ryan asked whether she had called her doctor.

She hung up.

Then she changed tactics.

She contacted Emily’s mother, Susan.

The two women had met only twice.

Diane told Susan she was worried Emily was isolating Ryan from his family.

Susan listened for ten minutes.

Then said:

“My daughter is four months pregnant. Why are you asking me to pressure her for you?”

Diane never called again.

Next came the baby shower.

Diane announced she was hosting one.

Emily said no.

Diane ordered decorations anyway.

Ryan canceled them.

Diane told relatives Emily was excluding her.

Laura corrected the story publicly in the family group.

Not cruelly.

Just factually.

Emily already has a shower organized by her friends. Diane offered to host a second one after being told no. Please stop contacting Emily about this.

For the first time, Diane could not control every version before other people compared them.

Several relatives began asking questions about Laura too.

Why had they been told she abandoned Michael?

Why did she have emails proving years of attempted contact?

Diane stopped attending larger family events temporarily.

She called it humiliation.

Laura called it consequences.

Emily called it quiet.

She preferred quiet.
