Chapter 8 - THE GHOST SYSTEM

Dominic slowly lowered his satellite phone, his dark eyes searching Grace’s face with a mixture of reverence, confusion, and deep, profound shock.

For five years, he had believed he was the protector of this household. He had spent his nights attending violent sit-downs in warehouses near the shipyards, shaking hands with corrupt aldermen, and absorbing the stress of an empire so that Grace could live in peace sixty floors above the noise. He had treated her like a fragile, exquisite diamond that had to be kept in a velvet-lined box, shielded from the dirt of his family's sins.

Standing in front of him now, framed by the rain-lashed glass of their penthouse, she looked less like a diamond and more like the edge of a guillotine.

"What do you mean, we play mine?" Dominic asked, his baritone rough around the edges.

Grace walked back to the low table. She did not sit down. She picked up Dominic’s phone, tapped the screen to disable the notifications, and set it face down on the polished stone.

"When I designed the server architecture for the Langford annex three years ago," Grace said, her tone smooth, conversational, and chillingly clinical, "I knew your father’s old associates would eventually try to audit the Calumet proceeds. I knew that men like Judge Vale don't stop hunting until they find a body or a bank account."

She turned her head, looking out at the distant, glittering towers of the financial district across the dark river.

"The server rack in the third sub-basement doesn't hold the real ledgers, Dominic."

Dominic stared at her, his lips parting in pure, unadulterated disbelief. "What?"

"It’s a honeypot," Grace explained softly.

A tiny, faint ghost of a smile touched the corners of her lips—a cold, brilliant smile that sent an electric jolt straight through Dominic’s chest.

"It’s an air-gapped decoy system," she continued. "It looks real. It has twelve thousand pages of financial transactions, complete with forged bank stamps, encrypted routing numbers, and shell company manifests that appear to link the forty million dollars to your personal accounts."

She turned her hazel eyes back to him, burning with an ancient, terrifying intellect.

"The moment anyone plugs an external flash drive or a forensic tap into that terminal, the system initiates an automated, irreversible cryptographic mirror. It downloads their IP address, copies every unencrypted file on their device, and transmits their exact geographic coordinates directly to our private cloud server."

Dominic’s breath caught in his throat. His knuckles uncurled, his posture loosening as the impossible genius of her trap washed over him.

"You baited the vault," Dominic whispered, awe bleeding through every syllable.

"I baited the vault three years ago," Grace confirmed. "I was simply waiting for someone greedy enough to take the bait."

She pointed to the phone on the table.

"Madison’s team didn't steal our secrets tonight, Dominic," Grace said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp, lethal register.

"They just handed us the evidence that will put Judge Vale, the Sterling Fund, and their entire legal committee in federal prison for corporate espionage and extortion before the sun rises tomorrow."
