Chapter 10 - THE RESOLUTION BEFORE DAWN

The penthouse was alive with the hum of cold, technological retribution.

Grace sat at the dark macassar ebony desk in the library alcove, her ivory satin dress glowing softly under the focused beam of a modern brass desk lamp. Her slender fingers moved across her laptop keyboard with rhythmic, lethal precision, routing the fourteen gigabytes of extracted files through an encrypted proxy server directly to the private email terminal of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

Dominic stood beside her, his navy suit jacket discarded over a leather armchair, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms to reveal the dark, intricate ink of his family’s heritage coiling along his tendons. He held a crystal tumbler of sparkling water with lime, his posture relaxed, his dark eyes watching the progress bar on her screen reach one hundred percent.

"The U.S. Attorney will have the search warrants signed by five in the morning," Grace stated, her voice calm, level, and entirely businesslike as she closed her laptop with a soft, definitive click.

She turned her chair to face him.

"Judge Vale’s personal emails contain three years of offshore wire transfers from the Sterling Fund," Grace said. "Along with the explicit instructions he gave Madison to access the Langford’s private service elevator tonight. The entire operation is documented in his own handwriting."

"And Madison?" Dominic asked, leaning his hip against the edge of the desk, looking down at his wife with unvarnished pride.

"Madison will wake up tomorrow morning to find her social media accounts seized as evidence in a federal racketeering indictment," Grace replied, her dark eyes flashing with quiet, devastating satisfaction. "The press won't be writing about an affair, Dominic. They’ll be writing about how the daughter of a corrupt judge was caught committing corporate espionage on private property."

Dominic set his glass down on the desk with a quiet clack.

He reached out his large, scarred hand, his fingers gently catching Grace’s chin, tilting her face upward into the warm lamplight.

He didn't speak of business. He didn't speak of the Sterling Fund, the forty million dollars, or the federal warrants that were about to tear through the city’s legal establishment.

He looked at the woman who had saved his life, his empire, and his name without ever leaving the comfort of their living room.

"You are a terrifying woman, Grace Russo," Dominic whispered, his baritone rough, thick with an awe that bordered on reverence.

"I am an accountant with an appetite for survival, Dominic," Grace murmured back, a soft, radiant smile finally illuminating her delicate features, chasing away the last lingering shadows of the night.

She rose from the chair, stepping into the circle of his arms.

Dominic’s powerful frame enveloped her, his hands pressing against the small of her back, holding her securely against his chest as the first pale, silver light of dawn began to break over the dark waters of Lake Michigan.

Outside, the rain had completely stopped.

The clouds were parting over the Chicago skyline, revealing a clean, brilliant horizon of pale gold and slate-blue. Below them, sixty floors down, the city was waking up, entirely unaware that its balance of power had been redrawn in the dark by a woman in an ivory satin dress sitting beside a cold cup of tea.

Grace rested her cheek against Dominic’s chest, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart beneath his damp shirt, knowing that the empire was safe, the fortress was unbroken, and the secrets of the Langford Hotel remained buried deep beneath the stone.
