Chapter 9 - UNEARTHING THE ASHES

The ballroom was an airless, frozen tomb.

Luca stood paralyzed, staring down at the woman kneeling in the shattered glass. The pieces of the darkest night of his life were being torn from the shadows and laid bare before six hundred witnesses.

"You..." Luca breathed, his chest heaving as if he had just run a marathon through deep water. "You were the civilian on the bridge."

"I didn't run because I was afraid of the fire, Mr. Moretti," Hannah said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, terrifying clarity that made Marco stiffen behind his boss.

Hannah wiped the tears from her cheeks with the back of her wrist, her blue-gray eyes locking onto Luca’s face with unyielding, forensic precision.

"I ran because while I was pulling your daughter from that burning car, the men who planted the bomb walked back down the embankment to confirm the kill."

Luca’s heart stopped dead in his chest.

"What?" Luca whispered.

"They thought everyone was dead," Hannah continued, her words cutting through the pressurized room like surgical steel. "Two men in tactical gear. They had silenced carbines. They were standing ten feet from where I was hiding in the drainage ditch with Sophia pressed against my chest, covering her mouth so she wouldn't cry."

Hannah took a deep, trembling breath, her gaze never wavering from Luca’s dilated pupils.

"They were talking on an open encrypted radio, Luca. I heard the voice on the other end. The man giving the orders... the man who authorized the strike on your wife and daughter... he wasn't from the Marcone syndicate. He wasn't from the Russian cartel in Brighton Park."

Hannah paused, her chin trembling as she delivered the final, devastating indictment:

"The voice giving the execution order was coming from inside your own family office. He used the callsign Sovereign Seven."

Behind Luca, a sudden, violent movement broke the silence of Table One.

Angelo Moretti—Luca’s fifty-two-year-old cousin, the chief financial officer of the Moretti industrial holdings, a man who had stood beside Luca at his wife’s funeral and wept openly into a silk handkerchief—abruptly stood up from his chair.

Angelo’s face was the color of curdled milk. His hands were shaking so violently that he knocked his chair backward, the mahogany wood clattering loudly against the marble floor. He didn't say a word. He began to back away toward the private service exit near the kitchen, his eyes darting frantically toward the front doors.

Luca did not have to look back.

He didn't need to check the callsign. Sovereign Seven was the private military encryption channel reserved exclusively for the board of directors of Moretti Logistics—a channel that only three men in the world possessed the biometric codes to access.

The betrayal had not come from the outside.

Angelo had orchestrated the bombing to eliminate Luca’s direct lineage, clearing the path to seize control of the billion-dollar shipping empire.

Luca’s jaw locked into an expression of subterranean, apocalyptic fury. Without turning his head, without breaking his gaze from Hannah, Luca raised his right hand a fraction of an inch and snapped his fingers once.

It was a microscopic gesture, but to Marco and Vincenzo, it was an absolute death sentence.

The two enforcers moved like black lightning. They crossed the ballroom in four violent strides, intercepting Angelo before he could reach the kitchen doors. Marco’s massive arm hooked around Angelo’s neck, dragging the screaming executive backward into the shadows of the service hallway, the heavy sound of a muffled blow cutting off his pleas before the doors swung shut.

The ballroom patrons sat in petrified, frozen terror. Not a single person reached for a phone; not a single security guard from the venue intervened. In Chicago, everyone knew that when the Moretti family settled debts of blood, you looked at your plate and waited for the Don to speak.
