Chapter 5 - THE SHATTERED SILVER

Across the ballroom aisle, Hannah Carter felt the room tilt beneath her knees.
The color drained from her cheeks until her fair skin was as white as the damask tablecloths. Her blue-gray eyes dilated in sheer, unadulterated terror as she watched the little girl sprinting toward her, hearing her name shouted by a child who hadn't spoken it in three long years.
Hannah’s fingers went completely, utterly numb.
The heavy, round silver serving tray she had been holding balanced against the edge of the table slipped from her slack grip.
CRASH.
The sound of shattering glass tore through the dead silence of the ballroom like an explosion. The three heavy tumblers pulverized against the hard marble, spraying amber-colored apple juice, crystalline shards, and crushed ice across a six-foot radius. The heavy silver tray clattered and spun across the floorboards with a deafening metallic screech, but nobody flinched. Nobody even looked at the broken glass.
Hannah didn't care about the glassware. She didn't care about the six hundred elite guests watching her.
Dropping her hands to the floor, ignoring the shards of broken glass that bit into the palms of her hands, Hannah collapsed forward onto both knees right in the center of the aisle. She threw her arms wide open, her starched white apron spreading across the wet floor, her mint-green service dress soaking in the spilled juice.
Sophia hit her like a cannonball.
The three-year-old launched her small body through the air the final two feet, throwing her arms violently around Hannah’s neck. The impact knocked Hannah back against her heels, but her strong, maternal arms clamped around Sophia’s back like iron bands, pulling the trembling child flush against her chest.
Sophia buried her face into the curve of Hannah’s neck, right beneath the soft blonde-brown hair pinned into the maid’s headpiece, her small hands clutching the lace collar of the mint-green dress with terrifying, white-knuckled desperation.
"Hannah! Hannah! Hannah!" Sophia sobbed, her words dissolving into ragged, gasping hiccups of pure, unadulterated joy.
Hannah’s composure shattered completely.
Hot, scalding tears broke over her eyelashes, streaming down her round, rosy cheeks, soaking into the yellow ruffles of Sophia’s floral dress. She clutched the little girl so tightly that their heartbeats seemed to merge into a single, frantic rhythm, rocking her back and forth on the wet marble floor in the center of the ballroom.
"I've got you, my sweet girl," Hannah wept, her voice cracked with three years of buried agony and love. "I've got you. You're okay. You're walking... oh, God, you're walking..."
Sophia pulled back just enough to look Hannah in the eyes, her hazel irises swimming with tears, her tiny chest heaving beneath her ruffles. She reached up with both of her small hands, cupping Hannah’s wet cheeks with her tiny palms, her sweet voice ringing clear and true through the silent room:
"You kept your promise!" Sophia cried, smiling through her tears, hugging her neck again with all her strength. "You came back! You kept your promise to me!"
The words fell like lead weights into the absolute silence of the Drake Hotel.

Six hundred people stood frozen in place, politicians and mob capos alike watching the plus-sized banquet waitress and the mafia princess weeping in an embrace on the floor.
Then, cutting through the weeping, came the heavy, rhythmic sound of leather dress shoes striking the marble with terrifying, deliberate force.
