Chapter 14 - BREAKING THE FENCE

A week later, Officer Ruiz called Laura in for one more interview, this time to connect the old photographs with the recent files found in Adrian’s office.

Emma waited in the lobby with a vending-machine ginger ale and a headache from too little sleep. When Laura came out, her face looked wrung dry—but clearer.

“He kept everything,” Laura said as they walked to the car.

“Everything?”

Laura nodded. “Enough that other women are being contacted.”

Emma stopped walking. “Other women?”

“Some from years ago. Some more recent. Patterns like mine.” Laura looked up at the pale afternoon sky. “That drawer wasn’t only about me.”

Emma felt sick, then furious, then sick again.

In the car Laura sat behind the wheel without starting the engine. “For a long time,” she said, “I thought the worst thing that happened was nobody believed me. But maybe the worse thing was that after a while I started not believing myself either.”

Emma turned toward her.

“That’s what control does,” Laura continued. “It teaches you to doubt your own alarm bells.”

Emma thought about every moment over the last few years when Laura had felt the urge to explain and swallowed it instead. Every night she had looked at that geofence. Every terrible compromise fear had built.

“You believe yourself now,” Emma said quietly.

Laura looked at her daughter and nodded.

“Yes.”

When they got home, Emma asked for her phone.

Laura handed it over immediately.

Emma opened Maps, then Settings, then everything else out of habit—almost expecting some hidden monitoring system to still be there. Nothing.

She set the phone down. “So what happens now?”

Laura leaned against the counter. “Now I learn how to protect you without trying to possess the information around you.”

Emma smirked faintly. “That sounded like a therapy worksheet.”

“It probably was.”

For the first time since this started, the air between them did not feel loaded with an invisible tripwire.

The fence Laura had drawn around Emma’s life was not gone all at once.

May you like

But it had cracked.

And through the crack, something better was finally trying to grow.
