Chapter 1 - THE DRIVEWAY

Emma Parker had barely set her overnight bag down on Mia’s front porch when headlights washed across the siding.

A second later, Laura Parker’s SUV lurched into Mia’s driveway so hard the tires gave a short, ugly squeal. The driver’s door flew open before the engine even settled. Laura came out fast, jaw tight, eyes fixed on Emma like she had caught her stepping into traffic.

She didn’t greet Mia. She didn’t knock. She didn’t even pretend to smile.

She marched straight to the porch, snatched Emma’s overnight bag off the welcome mat, and hurled it into the back seat of the SUV.

“Get in. Now.”

Emma stood there, stunned. Ten minutes earlier she had texted her mother that she’d arrived safely. Laura had replied with a single thumbs-up. Nothing in that reply had hinted at this.

“I got here ten seconds ago!” Emma shot back.

Laura lifted her phone, screen facing Emma only for a second.

“I know.”

That one answer changed the air between them.

Because it wasn’t just controlling. It was precise.

Emma looked from her mother to Mia, who had opened the door and frozen in the entryway, socks on hardwood, confusion all over her face. The porch light made everything feel too bright, too exposed. Emma suddenly felt like everyone was seeing something she wasn’t.

Laura didn’t raise her voice again. She didn’t need to. Emma got in the car because there was something in her mother’s face she had never seen before—not anger, not embarrassment.

Fear.

The entire ride home, Laura drove in rigid silence, both hands clenched on the wheel. Emma stared out the window, replaying that answer over and over.

I know.

Later that night, still burning with humiliation and suspicion, Emma walked into the dark family kitchen to get water—and stopped.

Laura’s tablet lay on the island, screen glowing softly in the dark.

A family-location map was open.

Emma stepped closer.

There, circling Mia’s neighborhood in a clean digital ring, was a geofence.

Emma picked up the tablet and tapped it.

A settings panel opened.

Notify when Emma enters this area.

Her pulse stumbled.

She opened the details.

Created 3 years ago.

Emma stared at the date, ice moving through her veins.

“But I didn’t even know Mia three years ago…”

Behind her, a floorboard creaked.

Emma turned.

Laura stood in the kitchen doorway, frozen, staring at the tablet in Emma’s hands.

Neither of them spoke.

And for the first time in her life, Emma felt certain her mother had been hiding something far bigger than strict rules.
