Chapter 6 - The Fall of V-Luxe

The fall of Valeria’s business empire was swift, public, and brutal.
Within seventy-two hours of the asset freeze, news of the financial fraud investigation leaked to the local Chicago business press.
A prominent city blog published a front-page article titled: "Gold Coast Salon Mogul Indicted for $1M Fraud and Elder Exploitation." Attached to the article was the very Instagram screenshot Valeria had taken of me sleeping on the couch, alongside the forensic audit report showing how she had stolen my health insurance money to fund her marketing campaigns.
The public reaction was instantaneous and unforgiving.
Hundreds of comments flooded her social media channels, condemning her cruelty and greed. Her high-profile VIP clients canceled their memberships en masse, rushing to distance themselves from her brand.
By Tuesday afternoon, the lease on her Gold Coast salon location was formally terminated by the commercial landlord due to non-payment and legal liability.
Construction crews tore down her glittering sign from the storefront, throwing the expensive acrylic letters directly into a dumpster on the street.
I sat in my office at Sterling Prime Meats, watching the news broadcast on the wall-mounted television while Carolina placed a hot cup of coffee on my desk.
"Her assets are officially frozen, Arthur," Carolina reported, sitting across from me. "The District Attorney’s office has formally charged Valeria with two felony counts of grand larceny, bank fraud, and forgery. She couldn't post bail, so she’s currently being held at the Cook County Department of Corrections."
"Has she reached out?" I asked.
"Her court-appointed public defender called Marcus Vance this morning," Carolina said with a satisfied smile. "She offered to sign over all remaining equipment from her boutique salon to Sterling Prime Meats as partial restitution if you agree to ask the prosecutor for leniency."
I looked at the framed photograph of Eleanor sitting on my desk.
"Tell her lawyer no," I said quietly. "She showed no leniency when she threw ice water in my face. She showed no leniency when she scattered Eleanor's memory box across a cold garage floor. Let the law take its full course."
Just then, my desk phone rang.
I picked it up. "Arthur Sterling."
"Dad?"
It was Julian's voice. He was calling from a public payphone near a train station.
"Julian," I said.
"I signed the papers, Dad," Julian said, his voice quiet, stripped of all arrogance. "I surrendered my equity shares back to the trust. I filed for divorce from Valeria this morning. I'm... I'm staying at a cheap motel near Fulton Market. I got a job working the morning dock shift at a logistics company down the road."
I sat back in my leather chair, listening to the noise of the city in the background of his call.
"Are you working hard?" I asked.
"My hands are covered in blisters, Dad," Julian choked back a sob. "I lift crates from four in the morning until noon. I... I finally understand how hard you worked for me every single day of my life."

I closed my eyes, feeling a heavy weight lift from my chest.
"Work your shift, Julian," I said gently. "Learn the trade. And when your shift ends on Friday... come to the warehouse. We’ll have a cup of coffee together."
