Chapter 3 - Cutting the Supply Lines

By two o'clock that afternoon, the first waves of panic struck the Lincoln Park house.
I was sitting in my truck parked two blocks away from the property, eating a simple turkey sandwich, when my phone began ringing incessantly.
It was Julian.
I let it ring six times before I finally pressed answer and held the phone to my ear.
"Dad! Where are you?!" Julian screamed through the speaker, his voice tight with blind panic. "Valeria just went to pay the contractor for the new Gold Coast salon, and her corporate card was declined! The bank says our corporate credit lines are completely frozen!"
"Is that so?" I said calmly, taking a bite of my sandwich.
"Dad, this isn't funny!" Julian yelled. "The contractor is threatening to pull his crew off the site! Valeria is crying in the kitchen! The bank teller said the main account was restricted by the primary trustee! Did you do this?!"
"Julian," I said softly. "You canceled my health insurance six weeks ago to pay for your wife's salon marketing. Did you think I wouldn't notice?"
There was a sudden, suffocating silence on the line. I could hear Julian's ragged breathing over the phone.
"Dad... look, that was a mistake," Julian stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating. "Valeria said we needed to trim unnecessary household expenses... I didn't realize she cut your policy—"
"You signed the papers, Julian," I interrupted sharply. "You were too cowardly to read what your wife placed in front of you. You put your mother’s house up as collateral for a salon you don't even own. You let Valeria throw ice water in my face and lock me out of my own bedroom."
"Dad, please—"
"I am at work, Julian," I said coldly. "Don't call this line again unless it's an emergency."
I hung up the phone before he could reply.
Ten minutes later, Valeria called me directly. I answered immediately.
"Listen to me, you old fool!" Valeria shrieked, her voice stripped of all its usual condescending charm. "I don't know what kind of game you think you're playing, but you turn those credit lines back on right now! I have VIP clients coming to the house in an hour, and my caterers haven't been paid!"
"Valeria," I said, my voice smooth as silk. "You told your followers on Instagram that I contribute zero to the household and sleep until noon."
"That was a joke!" she spat.
"Well, here is the punchline," I replied. "Since I contribute zero, I have decided to stop paying for your life entirely. The corporate cards are revoked. The household expense account is closed. And as of one hour ago, Marcus Vance filed an emergency injunction with the Cook County Circuit Court to freeze all assets connected to V-Luxe Aesthetics."
"You can't do this!" she screamed. "Julian owns half of Sterling Prime Meats!"
"Julian owns nothing," I said coldly. "He is an employee. And as of ten minutes ago, he has been officially suspended without pay pending a forensic audit."
I cut the call and tossed my phone onto the passenger seat.
I watched through my windshield as a flatbed tow truck pulled up to the Lincoln Park house. Two men in work jumpsuits got out and began preparing to tow away the luxury German SUV that Julian had leased using the company’s fleet credit account.

From the second-floor window—my old bedroom—Valeria looked out, screaming hysterically at the tow truck drivers while clutching her phone.
This was only day one.
