Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail of Blood

The realization crashed over Marisol like a tidal wave.

Uncle Marcus—the high-powered corporate attorney who had allegedly died in a boat accident ten years ago, leaving his estate to Marisol's parents—wasn't just a distant relative. He had been the architect of her entire life.

"Priya," Marisol said, her voice dropping into an eerie, hyper-focused calm. "Marcus didn't die ten years ago, did he?"

Priya swept her hands across her keyboard, opening the state's master probate registry and cross-referencing Marcus Vance's death certificate against the recent loan documents from the lakehouse mortgage.

On the screen, two digital signatures appeared side by side under forensic comparison software.

The signature on Marcus Vance's 2016 death certificate matched the signature of the private lender who had issued the predatory five-million-dollar mortgage against the lakehouse three months ago.

"He staged his death," Priya breathed, looking at the monitor in shock. "Marcus created the private lending firm. He’s been draining your parents' remaining assets, using you as the guarantor, while setting up a legal mechanism to seize your thirty-million-dollar trust the second you default."

"My parents aren't the masterminds," Marisol said, her mind piecing together the family dynamics. "They’re greedy, lazy, and arrogant, but they’re too stupid to pull off an international fraud scheme like this. Marcus has been controlling them from the shadows, feeding them money, using them to keep me trapped in the family ecosystem until my thirtieth birthday."

"And when you walked out of that lunch three days ago and canceled the lakehouse payments," Priya realized, "you accelerated his timeline. You forced his hand."

Marisol grabbed her coat from the chair, her brown eyes flashing with dangerous determination. "He thinks because I’m an accountant, I’m just going to hide behind spreadsheets and file police reports."

"Where are you going?" Priya asked, standing up from her desk.

"I’m going to the lakehouse," Marisol said, pulling her phone from her pocket. "Because if Marcus wants to play with financial records, he’s about to learn what happens when a forensic accountant audits a crime scene."
