Chapter 4 - The Unsealed Void

Priya paused, her fingers resting on the red wax seal of the hidden file. "Wait... this came with the county archive packet. It was flagged under your tax ID, but it was sealed under a judicial gag order that expired this morning."

Priya broke the wax seal, pulled out the inner document, and unfolded the yellowed parchment paper.

As Priya scanned the top three lines of the document, her face instantly drained of color. Her lips parted in shock, her eyes darting back and forth across the text as if trying to deny what was written on the page.

Marisol watched her attorney’s reaction, feeling a sudden, ice-cold knot form in the pit of her stomach. "Priya? What is it?"

Priya didn't answer right away. She slowly looked up, her hand visibly shaking as she held the document out across the desk.

Marisol snatched the file from Priya’s fingers.

She brought the paper close, her eyes reading the bold black header at the top of the state official registry: CERTIFICATE OF ADOPTION AND IDENTIFICATION AMENDMENT — STATE FILE #88-4091.

Marisol read silently, her breath freezing in her lungs.

The document stated in unambiguous legal terms that Marisol was not the biological daughter of her mother and father. She had been adopted as an infant under an illegal, closed private arrangement twenty-eight years ago. But it was the secondary clause attached to the estate trust that made her hand begin trembling violently.

The original birth parents had established a blind thirty-million-dollar trust fund for Marisol, set to mature on her thirtieth birthday—a trust that could only be accessed or managed by her legal guardians if Marisol were declared mentally incapacitated or legally deceased.

Marisol slowly looked back at Priya in stunned, breathless disbelief, her eyes wide with horror as the terrifying pieces of her life finally clicked together.

Her entire life—the emotional coldness, the financial demands, the relentless push for her to work as an accountant for the family—had not been about family ties. It was a long, calculated game to exploit her skills, steal her identity, and eventually claim a fortune that didn't belong to them.
