Chapter 7 - Lena Came Back To Campus

I posted the full video at 7:06 the next morning.

Not because I became brave overnight.

Because I woke up and discovered someone had added slow motion to Rachel’s punch.

The lie was improving while I slept.

I uploaded the full seven minutes.

No music.

No caption except:

Full video from East Quad.

Then I turned off comments.

Within forty minutes, the conversation changed.

Not in my favor.

Good.

Not entirely in Rachel's either.

People argued over her punch.

My slap.

The cake.

Whether anyone should have touched anyone.

Whether Brooke was creepy for filming.

At least they were arguing about what actually happened.

Mostly.

Rachel texted:

Thank you.

Then, three minutes later:

That does not mean we're okay.

I laughed despite myself.

Fair.

Campus security confirmed they had received the original.

My conduct meeting was scheduled for Monday.

Rachel’s event shift was restored.

Ordinary.

No thunder.

I spent the morning avoiding everyone.

At noon, Brooke texted:

Lena wants to see you.

I replied:

No.

Then:

Where?

Brooke sent the courtyard behind North Hall.

Of course.

I almost didn't go.

I went.

Lena stood beside the old brick residence building wearing a green staff badge from the youth nonprofit.

She looked older.

So did I.

Brooke was nowhere visible.

Good.

Lena saw my cheek.

“Rachel?”

“Yes.”

She almost smiled.

“Still has a right hand.”

I stared.

“You wanted to see me.”

“No.”

That annoyed me.

“Brooke said—”

“Brooke wanted us to see each other.”

Of course.

I looked around.

“Is she recording?”

“I told her if she did, I was leaving.”

Good.

Lena leaned against the railing.

For a while neither of us spoke.

Then:

“You released the whole birthday video.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the short one was a lie.”

She looked at me.

“Was it?”

I frowned.

“It showed something that happened.”

“Yes.”

“Without what caused it.”

Lena nodded slowly.

I heard myself.

So did she.

“There.”

I looked away.

“Don't.”

“I didn't say anything.”

“You were going to.”

“No.”

She surprised me.

“I don't need the perfect moment.”

We stood.

I finally asked:

“Why didn't you tell me Brooke filed North Hall?”

Lena laughed softly.

“How?”

“You had my number.”

“You blocked me.”

Right.

“Email.”

“I sent one.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“Two months later.”

“I never saw it.”

“Maybe.”

“What did it say?”

“That I didn't file the complaint.”

I searched my memory.

Inbox after North Hall.

Messages from housing.

Parents.

Friends.

A dozen people feeding my anger.

Lena could have been there.

Buried.

Deleted.

Maybe unread.

“I don't remember.”

“I know.”

She did not turn that into intent.

I appreciated it.

Then Lena said:

“I did grab you.”

“Yes.”

“I called you a parasite.”

“You did.”

“I was furious.”

“Yes.”

“You blocked the door.”

“I…”

I stopped.

“I think I did.”

Lena nodded.

“I thought you locked it.”

“I don't remember locking it.”

“Brooke says you didn't.”

That surprised me.

“What?”

“She watched the original again.”

My chest tightened.

“She told you?”

“Yes.”

“The door wasn't locked.”

“Then why did you say it was?”

Lena looked embarrassed.

“Because that's how I remembered feeling.”

There.

Her version had hardened too.

“What else did you remember wrong?”

She looked at me.

“Probably things.”

I almost laughed.

“Useful.”

“Your turn.”

I looked toward North Hall.

“I told people you came into my room looking for a fight.”

“You invited me up.”

My stomach dropped.

Memory.

A text.

Come get your laptop if you want it.

I had sent that.

“Yes.”

Lena continued:

“You knew I would come angry.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted witnesses?”

“No.”

“Brooke was already there.”

I looked at her.

Lena waited.

I hated the answer.

“I wanted Brooke there.”

“Why?”

“In case you lied.”

She nodded.

Not surprised.

The architecture had started earlier than I admitted.

Not with the birthday cake.

Not even with the video edit.

With wanting an audience before the conversation began.

Lena reached into her bag.

I tensed.

She pulled out nothing dramatic.

Just her phone.

She opened a still image.

North Hall.

Me.

Lena.

My hand gripping the sleeve of her jacket before her hand ever touched my wrist.

Brooke's original.

I stared.

“That was before the clip.”

“Yes.”

“Why show me?”

“Because you keep saying Brooke made the cut.”

“She did.”

“She did.”

Lena looked at me.

“But you knew what she cut.”

I stared at the image.

She was right.

I had never watched the full file afterward.

But that night?

I had been there.

May you like

I knew what happened before the first second everyone else saw.

I just liked the shorter version better.
