Chapter 12 - Brooke Got Framed By Her Own Original

Brooke called me.

Not crying.

Worse.

Furious.

“Did you post North Hall?”

“No.”

“Who has the folder?”

“You.”

“You.”

“Lena.”

“Rachel?”

“No.”

“Cara?”

“No.”

“Noah?”

“No.”

She had shared selected clips with the viewers.

Not the full folder.

North Hall went to Lena.

Lena had access.

“Call her.”

“I did.”

“And?”

“She says she didn't post it.”

“Believe her?”

Brooke hesitated.

“Yes.”

Interesting.

“Then who?”

Brooke laughed bitterly.

“Welcome to not owning the footage.”

I didn't enjoy the lesson.

The new clip was technically accurate.

Brooke really had suggested filming.

But it ended before I responded.

It made her look like the sole architect.

People were already calling her manipulative.

Some said she had entrapped Lena.

Some said she had engineered every conflict.

The story was moving toward Brooke as mastermind.

Convenient for me.

I felt the temptation immediately.

Let it.

Brooke had betrayed me.

Used Rachel.

Livestreamed me.

Why rush to rescue her from a true sentence?

Then I watched the clip again.

Twelve seconds.

Brooke:

Put the phone on the shelf. If she freaks out, we have it.

Cut.

Missing my answer:

Good.

Missing me placing the phone.

Missing me inviting Lena.

The clip was not false.

It was incomplete in exactly the way I had learned to exploit.

“Vanessa.”

“I’m here.”

“What are you thinking?”

“That if I say nothing, everybody decides this was your idea.”

Silence.

“And?”

I looked at the friends in my apartment.

All three were watching me.

“That would be useful.”

Brooke laughed once.

“Yeah.”

I hated how tired she sounded.

Then:

“Are you going to?”

“Do what?”

“Say nothing.”

I looked at the North Hall original on my laptop.

My own face.

My own choice.

“No.”

Brooke went quiet.

I posted the full North Hall video.

Not because she deserved saving.

Because I knew what the short clip was doing.

Caption:

The 12-second clip circulating is real but incomplete. Brooke suggested recording. I agreed. I invited Lena upstairs and blocked her path during the argument. Brooke later edited the shorter version. I approved and used it.

I stared at the last sentence.

Used it.

Then posted.

Within five minutes my phone became unusable.

Brooke texted:

You did not have to name yourself like that.

I replied:

Yes, I did.

Then deleted the reply before sending.

Too noble.

I tried again.

I wasn't letting you take all of it.

Sent.

Better.

Rachel called.

“You posted North Hall.”

“Yes.”

“Did Lena agree?”

I froze.

No.

My stomach dropped.

I had done it again.

Different motive.

Same assumption.

“I didn't ask.”

Rachel's voice hardened.

“Take it down.”

“It includes her.”

“Yes.”

I deleted the post immediately.

Too late.

Screenshots existed.

Copies.

The full video had already been downloaded.

I sat there staring at the empty post confirmation.

Tori whispered:

“You were trying to help.”

I looked at her.

“Don't.”

She stopped.

Intent had almost made me feel entitled again.

My phone rang.

Lena.

I answered.

“I'm sorry.”

She was silent.

“I should have asked.”

“Yes.”

“I took it down.”

“I know.”

“I'm sorry.”

Another silence.

Then:

“Vanessa.”

“What?”

“This is why I never wanted you to fix me.”

May you like

The call ended.

And for the first time, I understood that telling the fuller truth could still be another way of taking control from someone else.
