Chapter 6 - THE MAN AT THE HOSPITAL DOOR
Damien remained inside St. Mary’s for nearly forty minutes after security removed him from the trauma corridor.
He told officers he was concerned for his wife.
He said the torn fabric proved only that Emily grabbed him when he found her injured.
He claimed the words on her back had been made by unknown attackers who wanted to frame Meridian.
Then detectives asked why he demanded the missing work bag before asking about Emily’s condition.
His explanation changed.
He said the bag contained classified government materials.
Meridian held no active clearance covering Emily’s accounting files.
He requested an attorney.
Police did not arrest him immediately. They secured the hospital, collected his shirt, photographed the torn section and took his statement.
The remaining fabric matched what Emily held.
Fibers beneath her fingernails matched the same shirt.
Security footage from a gas station near their home showed Damien’s SUV leaving with two Meridian employees shortly before he arrived at St. Mary’s.
A license-plate camera captured Rebecca’s vehicle entering the alley.
The house itself had been cleaned quickly, but not completely.
Investigators found damaged shelving, cut restraints and traces of cleaning chemicals in the garage.
Emily’s work bag was gone.
Damien believed that without it, the case against his financial network would disappear.
He did not know Emily’s firm maintained an encrypted mirror of every audit file.
The missing ledger mattered.
It was not the only evidence.
The hospital door handle moved again near dawn.
This time, it was not Damien.
Two federal investigators entered with a warrant for records connected to the Mercer Veterans Renewal Foundation.
Emily’s audit firm had activated its emergency disclosure protocol after she missed a scheduled check-in.
