Chapter 5 - THE GARAGE

Emily had prepared three copies of the evidence.

One digital archive remained encrypted with her firm.

One physical ledger was inside a gray work bag.

The third was a summary she planned to place directly into my hands.

The night of the assault, she told Damien she was visiting me.

He asked why she needed her work bag.

She lied and said she had weekend reports to finish.

He smiled.

Then he offered to carry it to the car.

In the garage, he locked the interior door.

Two men from Meridian were waiting beside a black company SUV.

Damien wanted the encryption key and the names of anyone Emily had contacted.

She refused.

He told her Alan had already agreed to contain the problem.

That was the lie behind her whispered sentence:

“He said you already knew.”

Damien told Emily I knew about the fraud, that I had benefited from government contracts and that my military reputation depended on keeping her silent.

He said Alan had hidden worse things before.

He wanted her to believe both fathers had abandoned her.

When she still refused to unlock the files, the violence escalated.

The words across her back were intended for me if she was found.

Not merely a threat.

A declaration that the institutions and men she trusted had failed her.

Emily fought.

She tore a strip from Damien’s monogrammed shirt, pulling loose the embroidered unit emblem he wore as part of Meridian’s executive branding.

Then an unexpected car entered the alley behind the house.

The two Meridian employees panicked.

Damien drove Emily to St. Mary’s because he believed his father would control the medical record and keep police away.

He miscalculated.

Alan had already seen the cost of protecting him once.

When Emily arrived, he saw the injuries, the fabric and her terror.

For the first time, he chose his patient before his son.

He called me.

Then he placed the hospital on restricted access and notified law enforcement before Damien could move her elsewhere.

The visitor in the alley was not random.

It was Rebecca Sloan.

Emily had found her name in an old confidentiality payment hidden among Mercer Foundation legal expenses.

She contacted Rebecca three days earlier.

Rebecca came to deliver her original medical records and a copy of the settlement agreement Alan had helped arrange.

Her arrival interrupted the assault.

One woman Damien believed had been erased returned in time to save the next one.
