Chapter 4 - The Gift Upstairs
My parents arrived first. My sister Sarah came next with her husband. Rachel’s brother, Matthew, looked confused when I asked him to remain in the guest room without speaking.
Pastor Warren joined us because Rachel had told him I was becoming unstable and controlling. She had already begun building the story that would explain our divorce.
Michelle brought copies of the original bank records, login histories, and company documents.
Each person received a red box.
Inside was a small audio device, printed evidence, and a letter explaining exactly what Rachel had said about them.
My mother discovered Rachel had called her weak and easy to frighten.
Sarah learned Rachel planned to accuse her of stealing from the company.
Matthew found messages in which Daniel described him as useful because he would defend his sister without examining evidence.
Pastor Warren heard Rachel rehearsing a false claim that I had threatened her.
No one opened the boxes fully upstairs. We waited until Rachel and Daniel entered the living room below.
They talked for nearly an hour.
Daniel mocked me for bringing Rachel into “a family with more money than sense.” Rachel said I would sign away company shares once she threatened to ruin my reputation.
Then my car entered the driveway.
I walked inside holding the final red gift.
Daniel believed he had won because Rachel had told him I was ready to sign divorce papers after Christmas.
