Chapter 1 - Christmas in My Living Room

I opened my front door on Christmas night and found my wife sitting beside the man she swore she had not spoken to in years.
Rachel was on our beige sofa in a silver dress, close enough to Daniel Cross that their shoulders touched. His black jacket hung over my chair. Two half-empty glasses sat on the coffee table beneath the blinking lights of our Christmas tree.
I stood in the doorway holding a red wrapped gift.
Daniel looked at me first.
He did not move away from her. He leaned back, stretched one arm across the sofa, and smiled as if I had entered his house.
“You’re too late.”
Rachel shot to her feet so quickly that her knee struck the table. The glasses trembled.
“Ethan, please.”
I closed the door behind me. Cold air disappeared, leaving only the warmth of the room and the silence between us.
“Please don’t expose us,” she whispered.
For months, Rachel had told me I was paranoid. She said her late-night drives were Christmas errands, her deleted messages were spam, and the receipt from a diner two towns away must have belonged to someone else.
Daniel was the ex-boyfriend she claimed had humiliated her in college and vanished from her life.
Yet there he was, sitting comfortably beneath the stockings bearing our names.
I placed the gift on the coffee table.
Daniel’s smile began to fade.
My eyes moved toward the bookshelf.
Rachel followed my gaze.
Above the garland sat a camera small enough to disappear among the decorations.
Her breath caught.
I lifted the remote and pointed it toward the television. The screen glowed, blurred from where they sat, while their own voices filled the room.
Rachel covered her mouth.
“It recorded everything?”
Daniel slowly stood.
I looked toward the staircase as footsteps sounded above us.
“Your real gift is upstairs.”
May you like
Rachel stared at the ceiling.
“Everyone you lied to is here.”
