Chapter 6 - The Delivery

Clara’s condition deteriorated over the next two weeks.

The cancer had spread aggressively.

Pregnancy limited some treatment options, but ending the pregnancy would not have guaranteed her recovery.

Every decision arrived too late to feel merciful.

I moved into the family waiting suite.

Ben stayed too.

We did not repair our friendship with speeches.

We repaired it through coffee, medical forms, and long nights when one of us sat beside Clara while the other slept.

I apologized to her once.

She stopped me.

“Don’t turn this into a moment where I have to forgive you so you can breathe.”

She was right.

My guilt belonged to me.

Her remaining strength belonged to her.

At thirty-two weeks, Clara’s blood pressure dropped and the baby’s heart rate became unstable.

The doctors performed an emergency delivery.

Our daughter arrived small, furious, and alive.

We named her Grace.

Clara saw her through the incubator wall the following morning.

“She has your serious face,” she whispered.

“She has your strength.”

Clara smiled faintly.

“No. She has her own.”

Ben stood behind us, crying silently.

For one brief moment, the three of us looked less like a failed marriage and more like three people who had finally stopped hiding from the same truth.

Clara died six days later.

I held one hand.

Ben held the other.

Her final request was simple.

“Don’t let Grace inherit our silence.”
