Chapter 4 - Why Ben Was There

I looked at Ben across the consultation room.
“How did you become the person she called?”
His anger softened into exhaustion.
“She called me after you asked for the divorce.”
“Why you?”
“Because I already knew.”
Months earlier, Ben had seen Clara leaving an oncology clinic while visiting his sister in the same medical complex.
Clara begged him not to tell me until she could explain it herself.
He disagreed.
But she was an adult, and the truth belonged to her.
So he drove her to appointments when she was too weak.
He waited during infusions.
He brought groceries to the apartment after our divorce.
He signed forms as her emergency contact because she had removed my name after the court finalized everything.
I looked at him.
“Were you in love with her?”
He did not answer immediately.
That silence hurt.
“I loved her before you met her,” he finally said. “Then she chose you.”
My chest tightened.
“You never told me.”
“It wasn’t mine to use against your marriage.”
“Did she know?”
“Not until after the divorce.”
I stepped back.
Ben’s expression sharpened.
“She never returned it.”
I looked at him.
“She was dying, Ethan. She needed someone who would sit beside her without demanding an explanation for every silence.”
His voice broke.
“I held her hand because she was afraid.”
The answer should have made me jealous.

Instead, it made me ashamed.
Ben had stood where a husband should have stood—not because he had stolen my place, but because I had abandoned it.
